Should the Vikings consider Trey'Dez Green next offseason?
LSU tight end Trey’Dez Green is arguably the most dominant offensive player in the nation with his combination of elite size, pass-catching prowess, and ability to create mismatches. As a result, he’s a prospect that the Minnesota Vikings must know ahead of the season and is an interesting fit with Kevin O’Connell. ESPN analyst Jordan Reid mocked the two sides in his recent 2027 NFL Mock Draft.
Before we begin, it’s important to remember the goal of summer scouting and this article. It isn’t intended to be a finalized report on Trey’Dez Green or a statement saying the Vikings must draft him. On the contrary, it’s supposed to identify him as a talented player who could be an enticing option for them in April. Keep that in mind throughout this.
That said, Reid highlights how Green is an explosive playmaker set to break out in 2026.
“But if Murray plays well, Minnesota might be looking for a dynamic playmaker such as Green. Built like an NBA small forward, the 6-foot-7, 237-pound Green is one of the most unique players in the class,” Reid wrote. “He is a mismatch for defenders -- he's basically a supersized wide receiver -- and his production could explode in Lane Kiffin's uptempo offense.”
As Reid noted, Green is an intriguing player because of his unparalleled athleticism. He started his career as a dual-sport athlete, playing on LSU’s football and basketball teams in 2024. Following that season, he chose to step away from basketball and has since blossomed into one of the top tight ends in the nation. Last year, he tallied an impressive 33 receptions for 433 yards and seven touchdowns in a dysfunctional Tigers’ offense. Now, he’s set to benefit from Lane Kiffin and Sam Leavitt entering the building.
Green’s receiver-esc route running and agility make him a constant mismatch for opposing defenses. Linebackers aren’t quick enough to stick with him, while defensive backs don’t have the strength to compete in contested catch situations. This creates a reliable weapon for his quarterback to target, particularly while they are under duress.
The biggest flaw in Green’s game is his lackluster ability as a run blocker. He’s currently a liability on early downs and must improve before reaching the NFL. If he doesn’t, offensive coordinators will struggle to play him, as he will become an indication of a pass play. Developing in this is the key to establishing himself as a first-round prospect.
Despite these questions, Green is still a premier option for the Vikings with their need at tight end. TJ Hockenson has been fabulous during his tenure in Minnesota, but he’s been plagued by injuries and is aging. Because of this, finding his successor would behoove Kevin O’Connell’s offense and give their starting quarterback a dynamic weapon.
It’s too early to say anything definitive, but don’t be surprised to hear Trey’Dez Green’s name floating around Minnesota next offseason. He has the potential of a first-round prospect and could elevate their offense to another dimension.
