Drew Mestaker just pulled off a massive upset against Oregon and impressed in front of numerous NFL scouts.

Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker led the Cowboys to a massive upset against sixth-ranked Oregon on Saturday afternoon. He showcased his elite arm talent, mobility, and gunslinger mentality against the Ducks. While it’s still early, he’s an intriguing target for the Minnesota Vikings in the 2027 NFL Draft.

Despite a week one loss to Tulsa, Mestemaker bounced back and impressed against Oregon, going 26/43 for 317 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, he added six carries for 109 yards and one touchdown as a rusher. He rose to the moment and made the big plays that Oklahoma State needed to stun the nation.

The former North Texas quarterback has an exceptional arm that lets him hit every throw on the field. He puts ample velocity on his passes and can fit the ball in tight windows. Beyond this, he has an impressive deep ball and has pinpoint accuracy when he sets his feet in the pocket.

Mestemaker won’t consistently rush for 109 yards per game, but he has enough speed to extend the play and grab yards with his legs. He won’t be utilized in many designed quarterback runs, but he takes what the defense gives him and can evade pressure.

The most exciting part of Mestemaker’s game is his gunslinger mentality. He trusts his receivers downfield and gives them opportunities in one-on-one situations. He’s always looking for the haymaker and doesn’t shy away from hitting small windows. This makes him an electric prospect who can light up the defense for 40+ points.

While this is a needed trait in the NFL, Mestaker needs to dial it in. He makes questionable decisions and puts the ball in harm’s way far too often. Regardless of the win, this was evident against Oregon, as he had two interceptions. He needs to improve at reading the defense and taking the checkdown instead of shooting for the home run.

The Vikings’ quarterback room has potential with Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy; however, it’s been plagued by inconsistency. Outside of that, they have a talented roster ready to compete in the NFC North, but are being held back. As a result, it must be addressed next offseason, barring significant improvement.

If they choose to add one in April, then Drew Mestemaker will be an enticing target. His arm talent, mobility, and gunslinger mentality make him a premier quarterback in the nation who could be a franchise leader in the NFL if he cleans up his decision-making. Don’t be shocked to hear his name floating around Minnesota next offseason.
