Breaking down what the trade of quarterback JJ McCarthy could mean for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray.
The Minnesota Vikings made a very interesting move on Monday as they traded quarterback JJ McCarthy to the New York Giants in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick.
Following the trade, the Vikings now do not have a quarterback under contract past season as quarterbacks Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz will be free agents after the 2026 season comes to and end.
With that in mind, there is one key question that has to be answered. What does this trade mean for Kyler Murray?
To answer that question, let's take a look at Murray's production so far this season and see what that may suggest in terms of a plan for the Vikings when it comes to Murray's future in Minnesota.
So far this season, Murray is 2-0 as the Vikings starter, but he did miss a lot of the Week 1 game against the Green Bay Packers because he was injured early on, and Wentz was able to step in.
As a result of the injury, Murray did miss the Week 2 road duel against the Chicago Bears, which the Vikings were able to win with Wentz, and then this last week, Murray led Minnesota to a 23-16 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road.
While Murray is 2-0 as the starter and the Vikings are 3-0 overall, he has not been able to play as well as he would like.
In the two games Murray has played this season, he has completed 18 of his 34 pass attempts for 186 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, which has led to him completing 52.9 percent of his passes. On the ground, Murray has also added four rushes for 26 yards while averaging 6.5 yards per carry.
When it comes to Murray's performance thus far, he has struggled to get into a rhythm in this offense, despite having some great weapons, including wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, as well as tight end T.J. Hockenson and running back Aaron Jones.
Jefferson did miss a majority of the Vikings' game in Week 3 with an ankle injury, but the most recent update suggests that he may be on track to be able to play in Week 4.
With all that said, Murray has several reliable weapons and a great head coach like Kevin O'Connell, who could all help him to get on track.
Looking ahead to this next game, the Vikings are set to take on the Miami Dolphins in Week 4, which is a team that is 0-3 and has struggled with consistency.
So, this could be the prime opportunity for Murray to get into a great rhythm and go on a run that may help him and this Minnesota offense find something they can lean on as a strength to create positive momentum on offense.
This week, if Murray can figure out a way to find more consistent success through the air and on the ground, that may help O'Connell to open up this playbook a bit more, which could be huge for the success of the Vikings
As Murray and the Vikings head into Week 4, it will be interesting to see how Murray performs, and if he does perform well and can sustain that success throughout the rest of this season, that may be exactly what it takes for Minnesota to sign him to a long-term extension and possibly have him become the starter for the foreseeable future.
