Ellis remains in the ICU after a head injury suffered in a major fall. The rodeo community is lifting her and her family in prayers as they await further updates.

The rodeo world is rallying in prayer and support for barrel racer Anita Ellis, who remains in the ICU after a serious accident on November 15 where she suffered a head injury and facial fractures. Ellis, who has become one of the best stories in the WPRA this season, has not yet regained full consciousness but is showing positive neurological responses, according to updates from her family.

Ellis’ husband, Brandon Ellis, shared the first detailed update on Facebook, thanking the rodeo community for the outpouring of support and explaining the extent of her injuries.

“Yesterday, Anita had a serious fall and hit her head when she landed on the concrete. She was taken to the hospital and is currently in the ICU. Her first scan showed a small brain bleed… Her follow-up scan showed a few additional small bleeds and some fractures on the right side of her face. The important thing is that none of this is causing dangerous pressure, and she’s being monitored closely around the clock,” Brandon wrote.

He added that while Anita has not fully woken up, she responds to stimulation and moves on her own. These are signs doctors consider encouraging. The priority now, he said, is giving her brain “the rest and quiet it needs to heal.”

“We are staying hopeful… We’re incredibly grateful for the outpouring of prayers, love, and support. It truly means so much to our family.”

The accident comes at the end of what has been a huge year for Ellis, who is sitting No. 8 in the WPRA world standings after her first full season on the road. She purchased her WPRA card only in 2022, and her major win at The Calgary Stampede aboard her standout grey gelding SGL Rico marked a defining moment of her season and secured her first career trip to the NFR.

Her steady climb made her a fan favorite quickly, with many following her journey as she built momentum throughout the year.

Xtreme Barrel Race also shared details of her condition while announcing a fundraiser for medical and recovery expenses:

“Scans revealed a small brain bleed, a few additional minor bleeds, and fractures on the right side of her face… Thankfully, none are causing dangerous pressure, her vitals remain stable, and she is responding to stimulation — all encouraging signs as she continues to rest and heal.”

The post expressed what so many in the barrel racing community feel today, saying, “Anita has always been incredibly kind, respectful, and supportive to our community and staff. Now it’s our turn to show her the same love and strength she’s given to so many.”

At a time when she should be preparing for the biggest stage of her career, she is instead facing an unexpected and difficult challenge. The rodeo community is doing what they do best, standing firmly behind her and her family during this difficult time.

Sending continued prayers and lots of support to Anita Ellis and her family as we await further updates on her condition.
