Fifteen elite competitors have earned their place in one of reined cow horse’s most prestigious events.
The roster is officially set for the 2026 Run For A Million Cow Horse Challenge. Following the final qualifier at the NRCHA Kimes Ranch Derby in Scottsdale, Arizona, five riders earned their invitation to compete at South Point Arena & Equestrian Center August 9–15, joining an elite field set to compete for their place in cow horse history.
For those new to the sport, The Run For A Million has become one of the most prestigious and high-profile events in the Western industry. Originally launched as a reining competition, the event has expanded to showcase multiple disciplines, including the Cow Horse Challenge, Cutting Horse Challenge, Youth Working Cow Horse Challenge, Youth Reining Challenge, Rookie divisions, the Cowboy Heritage Ranch Challenge, and more. At its core, The Run For A Million celebrates elite horsemanship and offers competitors the opportunity to compete for substantial purses, including the headline-grabbing $1 million competition.
The Cow Horse Challenge showcases the versatility and athleticism that define the sport of reined cow horse. Competitors are judged on two phases: rein work and fence work (cow work). In rein work – similar to a reining pattern – riders guide their horses through circles, lead changes, spins, stops, and backups. In fence work, riders work a single cow, controlling it down the fence, turning it on the fence, and circling it in the arena.
Scores from both phases are combined to determine the champion. Unlike other NRCHA events that include three phases (herd work, rein work, and fence work), the Run For A Million Cow Horse Challenge focuses only on the rein work and fence work portions.
Topping the qualifiers from the NRCHA Kimes Ranch Derby was Sarah Dawson. A Million Dollar Rider, NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion, and Hackamore Classic Champion, Dawson is one of the NRCHA’s most respected trainers and competitors. Joining Dawson as qualifiers from the NRCHA Derby are Jordan Williams, Kyle Trahern (2024 Champion), Shane Steffen, and Shadd Parkinson.
These riders will join the group of competitors who had already secured their spots earlier in the season through qualifying events at the National Stock Horse Association Pre-Futurity and the NRCHA CINCH Stallion Stakes. The previously qualified riders include Todd Crawford, Chris Dawson, Nicholas Dowers, Shawn Hays, Kelby Phillips, Boyd Rice, Tucker Robinson, Erin Taormino, Jake Telford, and Justin Wright.
Now, with the qualifying season complete, the countdown to Las Vegas officially begins! The versatility of the modern cow horse is a testament to the years of training and hard work these trainers put into their craft. We look forward to seeing these elite teams showcase their talent on one of the industry’s biggest stages this August.
