John Cook is the former Nebraska Cornhusker’s head volleyball coach. He spent 25 seasons with the team and now that he is retired he is stepping into the arena.

Cook is known for his many accomplishments as a coach. He won four national championships and had fifteen conference titles. In all of his years of coaching he won over 83-percent of the games. This man knows what it takes to win.

He recently retired and it didn’t take him long to make headlines in Nebraska again but this time it would be in the team roping.

Cook put on his very own team roping to support the rodeo team for University of Nebraska-Lincoln. By the end of the two day event he was able to donate over $27,000 towards scholarships for the program. They are looking for momentum to build their new facility and this event did just that.

He traded in his sneakers for a pair of cowboy boots and entered up. His son Taylor was also in attendance to support the team and his dad’s new venture. They both rope on the head side, so they are unable to compete together, but it is a dream nonetheless.

Taylor ended up winning first and second place in the #9.5 roping. Then in the first round of the invitational roping both Taylor and John placed. Taylor went on to win second in the average.

This is only the first event Cook has put on, but it is going to continue annually. Cook was a part of a huge program that had so much support and he is using his name to help make a difference for the rodeo athletes in Lincoln. It will continue to grow in years to come and impact students in the best way possible!
