Night number one opens of the 2025 Wrangler National Finals with history on the line.

The 2025 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo officially begins tonight, December 4th. With it comes the richest payout the sport has ever seen. More than $13.5 million will be awarded over 10 nights in Las Vegas, marking the fifth straight year of increased prize money This creates one of the tightest, most unpredictable world championship races.

For years, the NFR paid out a straight $10 million, but as professional rodeo continues to grow, the finals now is offering even more life-changing money every year, and enough of it to completely reorder the world standings in a single round.

The 2025 Payout

Every event pays out the same amounts. Each night will pay 6 holes, and the average pays 8. With nearly $275,000 available to a contestant who wins multiple rounds and the average, nobody,  no matter how big their lead, can breathe easy yet

Big Leads Don’t Feel So Big When in Las Vegas

Some fans may think a leader like Rocker Steiner is safe with an $80,000 lead currently in the bareback riding. However this payout structure tells a different story. One missed mark out, one buckoff, or even one low-mark ride could flip the standings instantly. Second-place Sam Petersen and the rest of the field know it, and they’re coming for the gold buckle in a building known for momentum swinging quickly.

Just last year, Dean Thompson entered the Finals outside the main spotlight, nowhere near the projected champion in many minds. Ten nights later, he walked out of Las Vegas with a gold buckle. That’s what the NFR does best, it rewrites scripts every single night.

The Barrel Racing Battle

Kassi Mowry arrives as the season leader after earning more than $200,000 in just 28 rodeos. She was so efficient all year long and is looking to earn her second consecutive gold buckle. But she will be running without Jarvis, the standout gelding who carried her to the 2024 world title and helped her win $295,000 and the Ram Top Gun Award at last years NFR.

Her backup horsepower is talented, and Mowry is one of the winningest jockeys the sport has ever seen, but the door is still open for anyone.

Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi, a two-time world champion with winning history in the Thomas & Mack, is less than a round win behind her. Lisa Lockhart, making a historic 19th straight NFR, is well within striking distance too and could surpass $4 million in WPRA career earnings during this year’s Finals. They won’t be backing down, because in the little yellow building, one fast run changes everything.

Webb vs. “Money Mayfield”

World standings leader Riley Webb has been nearly flawless all season long. Shad “Money” Mayfield is known for heating up in times of pressure, and if he starts stacking round wins, Webb’s lead could vanish in a couple of rounds. With this payout, one big run can change a season and one mistake can change a career.

A Familiar Matchup

Ryder Wright enters the finals with a narrow lead over Damian Brennan, as if they picked up from last years finals. Ryder walked away the world champion, and Damian second. Last year the championship slipped from Brennan’s fingers on the final night. Damien is not planning on letting that happen again in 2025. This year, with only about $15,000 separating the two, nothing is decided, not even close.

That theme is consistent across every event.

Tonight It All Begins

Regardless of the event, the 2025 NFR will be decided not by season-long dominance, but by who can withstand the pressure and capitalize on the record-breaking payout.

By this time tomorrow, the leaderboard in every event could look completely different and by next Saturday night, entire careers will change forever.
