There are plenty of unforgettable moments during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, but before the action begins in the Thomas & Mack, there’s one tradition at the beginning that makes it real for every qualifier. It is the moment it all sets in, they’ve finally made it to the top.
The 2025 back number ceremony was no different. At the Southpoint Hotel and Casino, 15 contestants in each event walked across the stage to receive the number they will wear for ten nights or rodeo. This is the number that proves, without a doubt, they are at the top of the game.
For some, it’s a dream finally come true, while for others, it’s another big chapter in an already successful career.
This year, the mix of rookies and veterans is unique, and the back number ceremony revealed a lot of about the 2025 season.
Stetson Wright is returning after a comeback season. He was once again awarded the coveted #1 back number. As he walked across the stage, he set the tone for the night with excellence on full display.
Behind him came 118 additional qualifiers across events. Each of these cowboys and cowgirls carries their own story to this accomplishment and their own challenges too. It is not an easy path to Vegas.
Some veterans have walked that stage more than a dozen times and still felt the weight and excitement of the moment. First timers also stood taller than they ever have. Many walked the stage with their kids by their side, sharing the stage with tiny boots, sparkly dresses, and bit smiles, because for many families, the NFR isn’t just a dream for one, it’s a dream built together.
The buckle ceremony is where champions are crowned each night and the back number ceremony is where the contestants get to shine in a completely different way. It’s become a mini-fashion show all its own with custom jackets, rhinestone blazers, fringe, felt hats, feathered dresses, and family outfits that match from head to toe. Every contestant looked their best because this is a once a year moment.
Back numbers aren’t just assigned, they’re earned. They represent a year of early mornings, late nights, empty fuel tanks, miles of highway, heartbreak, close calls, and hard-won championships. From the 4 rookie bull riders making their first appearance to the 19-time NFR barrel racer, they all represent the very best the sport of rodeo has to offer in 2025.
The back number ceremony is the true beginning of the NFR. It’s the exhale before the big show. This is the moment contestants finally get to say “We made it.”
Now, with numbers pinned proudly on their backs and the adrenaline pumping, the 2025 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is officially underway.
To every contestant who stepped across that stage, you deserve that number and you belong there. Now the Thomas and Mack awaits.
