The equine and Western communities are mourning the loss of Dr. Cierra Cadena, DVM, a young veterinarian remembered for her compassion, intelligence and lifelong dedication to horses and the people who loved them.

Cadena passed away on September 21, 2026, only months after graduating from Texas A&M University’s veterinary program in May. She had recently begun an equine internship at the Equine Medical Center of Ocala in Florida, taking the next step toward a career she had worked for much of her life.

In a statement following her passing, the Equine Medical Center of Ocala described Cadena as an “amazing individual and a valued member” of its intern team, adding that her loss is being felt throughout the organization and veterinary profession.

But Cadena’s impact stretched far beyond the veterinary hospital.

She was part of the horse community long before earning the letters DVM after her name. The United States Team Penning Association remembered Cadena as one of its own—a familiar face whose friendship, smile, laughter and love for the sport made her part of the USTPA family.

For those who knew her personally, the loss has brought both grief and a larger conversation about the pressures faced by those who dedicate their lives to caring for animals.

Stillwater Equine Veterinary Services shared that Cadena was a friend whose family was close to theirs and that they had shown horses together. Their tribute described her as brilliant, kind and “one of a kind,” while encouraging others to remember the importance of kindness, compassion and strong leadership within the veterinary profession.

Crown B Photography echoed that message, remembering a woman who gave so much of herself to animals and the people around them. The tribute encouraged people to check on those who are often the ones caring for everyone else and to remember that struggles are not always visible from the outside.

Cadena’s death has also renewed attention around Not One More Vet, commonly known as NOMV, an organization dedicated to addressing mental health and well-being within the veterinary profession.

For the horsemen and women who knew Cadena, however, she will be remembered as much more than a veterinarian.

She was a daughter, friend, colleague, horsewoman and member of a community that watched her pursue a dream and celebrated when she achieved it. Only months ago, she was marking one of the greatest milestones of her life—graduating from veterinary school and beginning her professional career caring for horses.

Her career was only beginning, but the relationships she built and the lives she touched came long before a diploma or professional title.

Across the equine community, the messages shared in her memory carry a common theme: be kind, take care of one another and remember the person behind the profession.

Dr. Cierra Cadena spent her life caring for horses and the people connected to them. Now, the community she loved is remembering her in return.
