In a major disruption tied to the rapidly spreading EHV-1 outbreak, the South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas has withdrawn permission to host several major rodeo events scheduled for early December, including the highly anticipated National Finals Breakaway Roping, the PRCA Permit Challenge, and the Benny Binion Bucking Horse Sale.
This announcement is brand new as of Friday afternoon. The WPRA issued “for immediate release.” According to them, South Point officials notified that out of caution and in alignment with new biosecurity guidelines issued Nov. 21, the venue will not allow the events to take place as originally scheduled on Dec. 2, 3, or 4.
The official statement reads: “The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association have received notice from the venue regarding the 2025 National Finals Breakaway Roping, PRCA Permit Challenge, and Benny Binion Bucking Horse Sale. Out of caution and the Nov. 21 stringent biosecurity guidelines, the events will not take place on Dec. 2, 3 or 4 at the South Point Arena. Potential dates and venues are being explored to host these events in a timely manner.”
These December events are traditionally held in conjunction with the National Finals Rodeo, which also begins next week. While the NFR itself is not affected by South Point’s decision, more updates are coming in regards to all events.
The move reflects this escalating industry wide response to the EHV-1 outbreak. It is a highly aggressive and fast-moving strain and many have been affected. In the days since the outbreak was identified, vet clinics and state officials across the country have implemented emergency protocols, and numerous competitions and travel have been canceled or heavily restricted.
South Point’s decision marks the most high-profile cancellation to date and signals that more venue-based restrictions may follow.
The WPRA emphasized that they are actively searching for alternative locations and dates to ensure the affected events can still be held as close to schedule as possible. Further updates are expected in the coming days as the outbreak response continues to evolve.
