Even if you missed the NFR fantasy game action, you still have a chance to play, with Breakaway Pro Fantasy Rodeo set to begin Dec. 22 at the Fort Worth Stockyards. The best part, you can do it from anywhere!
There’s still time for all you rodeo fans to get in on the action, even if you missed the fantasy games tied to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas
The National Finals Breakaway Roping (NFBR) is set to begin Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Fort Worth Stockyards, with the second round scheduled for Dec. 23. This gives fans another opportunity to draft a team and compete for real cash prizes while watching the sport’s top breakaway ropers.
Hosted through Pro Fantasy Rodeo, the Breakaway game follows a structured salary-cap format that rewards both strategy and some risk. Each player is given a $350,000 salary cap to build a roster of five competitors.
This year’s top-seeded breakaway roper, Taylor Munsell, carries a price tag of $150,000, while the 15th-ranked competitor costs $10,000, with salaries decreasing in $10,000 increments throughout the field. Building a competitive team within the cap can be challenging. It forces players to balance their team well.
Adding another layer of difficulty, fantasy scoring is weighted by draft position. A team’s top pick earns 100% of that competitor’s winnings, followed by 80%, 60%, 40%, and 20% for picks two through five. That structure places extra pressure on selecting the right athlete at the top while still finding value later in your lineup.
Strategy varies widely among players. Some prefer to build around ropers they believe can catch every calf and contend for the average, which is the biggest single payout. Others opt for a mix that includes aggressive, fast “gun slingers” who may win rounds but also risk missing a few along the way.
The format rewards both consistency and calculated risk, making roster building as entertaining as the competition itself.
The game mirrors the excitement seen during the NFR fantasy contest, which ran all 10 rounds and paid out significant prizes. For Breakaway, the stakes remain high. There is a $10,000 grand prize, round-winner payouts, and $17,000 in total prize money are on the line.
Players can manage everything remotely, whether you are watching live from Fort Worth or tuning in on The Cowboy Channel, making it easy to play along from anywhere.
Team setup includes naming a team, submitting a salary-cap roster, and completing two tiebreakers. The first time breaker is a a separate five-roper lineup with no salary cap and the second is a prediction of total team earnings.
Once submitted and you have paid your entry fee, all that’s left to do is watch, cheer, and see how your strategy plays out.
With the talented field of ladies competing at this years NFBR, it really is anybodys game with PFR. Not one of the ladies is a bad pick, they just have different styles. They have all earned their spot among the rosters.
