Bull riding legend, J.B. Mauney parts ways with the Oklahoma Wildcatters PBR team in a mutual agreement.

In every sport, there are names that reach far beyond the arena. In rodeo, one of those names is J.B. Mauney. Over an 18-year career, Mauney left an undeniable mark on bull riding, competing at the highest level in both the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and the Professional Bull Riders (PBR).

Across nearly two decades, he captured two PBR World Championships and built a reputation as one of the toughest competitors the sport has ever seen. He’s most famously remembered as one of the only riders to conquer Bushwacker, the three-time PBR World Champion bull who dominated the sport for years. In 2025, Mauney’s legacy was cemented with his induction into the PBR Hall of Fame. His old-school style made him a constant fan favorite. It was a tough day for the sport when a neck injury forced him to announce his retirement in 2023.

Retirement, however, didn’t keep him away for long. When PBR introduced the Oklahoma Wildcatters to its Teams season in 2024, Mauney stepped into a new role as head coach. He guided the Wildcatters through their inaugural season and returned to lead them again in 2025.

Friday, February 20 the Oklahoma Wildcatters shared on social media that the team and Mauney “have mutually agreed to part ways,” giving him more time to focus on his family and BuckTown XV—his bull riding compound and training facility for the best riders and bull

“His leadership, commitment and dedication to our team have played an important role in shaping who we are,” the team’s CEO Brandon Bates said in the released statement. “We are grateful for the time and energy he invested in our program.”
