After fracturing his wrist at Cowboy Christmas, Daxton Felid has made a quick recovery. He is expected to return to competition within the week, with sights set on a qualifying spot for the NFR.
Cowboy Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year for most cowboys and cowgirls. However, it seems that this year, the Cowboys holiday season brought with it a flurry of injuries. Some of the world’s best rodeo athletes, including John Crimber and Weston Timberman who elected to withdraw from competition at Cowboy Christmas due to injury.
However, Daxtyn was one of the few unlucky athletes who got injured while competing at Cowboy Christmas. Bareback rider Daxtyn Fields was thrown from his mucking horse when he fractured his wrist. Since the initial injury in mid-July, he has been absent from all rodeo competition as he rested and healed from his injury.
After several weeks of recovery, it has been confirmed that he is expected to return to competition soon, even as soon as the first week of August. Unlike Timberman, Field’s injuries did not require surgery or extensive recovery, allowing him to return to competing with ample time to improve his PRCA standings.
Currently sitting No. 3 in the Resistor Rookie Race, his season before injury was on a positive and climbing track. However, Field has his sight set beyond the rookie race and has his focus on the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada. The pinnacle of rodeo competition, the NFR is what all rodeo athletes dream of competing at.
To qualify for this rodeo, Daxtyn must finish the season in the PRCA top 20. He currently sits at No. 23, only three slots below his goal. This gap is scalable, should he indeed return to competition this week. The longer he stays out of competition, the more his competitors could win and earn, growing the gap or even dropping his position.
Because there is over $2,000 separating Daxtyn from the No. 24 rider, Garrett Shadbolt, there is some cushion to allow for longer rest and recuperation, but not much. Less than one thousand dollars separates him from climbing another slot, making this the perfect time to rejoin competition.
With fast action, he could be well within the top 20 in the world to qualify for the NFR in his rookie season. Time is his biggest enemy, as the more time Daxtyn allows to pass, the harder it will be to climb the world standings ladder.
Overall, the rodeo community is thrilled to see this rookie ready to ride again so soon after his injury. A chance of Daxtyn claiming an NFR qualifying spot is still strong. If he can come back at his best, there is a high probability of fans being able to watch their favorite rookie come out of the yellow NFR chutes in December.
