Before there was a Tough Draw Tour, Tough Draw Sports, or Tough Draw Talks, there was a foundation.
That foundation was built through storytelling—and through one story in particular that helped shape the direction of everything that followed.
That story was Lane’s.
Brought to life through LANE: Life | Legend | Legacy, the story took shape in a feature-length documentary centered on the life and impact of legendary bull rider Lane Frost. His influence on Western culture continues to reach across generations, and telling that story came with a responsibility—to go beyond the version people already knew.

“To us this was more than a documentary,” said Stetson Frost, Lane’s nephew and founder of the Lane Frost Brand. “It’s a true story of a man going above and beyond, chasing his dreams while trying to navigate being human at the same time. The biggest takeaways we want people to have from LANE is to find Jesus, hard work pays off and second chances do exist,”
For Tough Draw founder Brad Hughes, the connection to Lane’s story started early.
“One of my earliest memories of experiencing movies in a theater was watching 8 Seconds,” Hughes said. “I was a kid, and I remember crying at the end of the movie. It was one of the first times I ever remember feeling emotion through storytelling.”
That moment stayed with him. Over time, it turned into a deeper appreciation for the people behind the sport and the stories that define it.
After studying film at The University of Texas at Austin and spending time in Los Angeles working with Scott Free Productions and Imagine Entertainment, Hughes returned to Texas with a clear direction—telling stories rooted in the Western world he had grown to love.
Tough DrawBut the documentary didn’t start with production. It started with relationships.
Working alongside the Frost family, the Lane Frost Brand, and collaborators at Out of Order Studios, the project gradually evolved from an idea into something much bigger—a responsibility to tell the story honestly.
“There had to be more to his life than what people already knew,” Hughes said. “The deeper we got into it, the more we realized this wasn’t just a story about a champion bull rider. It was a story about faith, humanity, relationships, and the impact one person can leave behind.”
Released in 2023, LANE: Life | Legend | Legacy brought together voices from those closest to Lane—family members, friends, fellow competitors, and modern athletes who continue to be influenced by his legacy.
For many, the impact of the film came from its willingness to tell the full story.
“I gotta be honest—it was tough to watch. Half of me was gone when Lane died,” said Tuff Hedeman, Lane’s best friend and four-time World Champion Bull Rider. “This true story tells the real life drama surrounding Lane’s life. I had a front row seat, and I will never forget that time in my life that was the best and then the worst. But for those who only know the 8 Seconds side of the story, this is the real story.”
Tough DrawThat honesty became one of the defining elements of the project.
“I think Lane would be proud of this documentary,” said Elsie Frost, Lane’s mother. “We hope people will enjoy it and know that Lane wasn’t perfect, but he knew Jesus.”
Themes of faith, humanity, redemption, and legacy run throughout the film—connecting deeply with audiences across the Western community.
Originally premiering in November 2023 through a private, invite-only screening, the documentary quickly grew beyond a single event.
What followed became known as the “Road to Cheyenne”—a series of screenings that brought the film directly to rodeo fans, families, athletes, and communities across the country.
The reach extended even further through coverage from major Western and rodeo media outlets, including PBR, Cowboys & Indians, Cowgirl Magazine, Sports Illustrated Rodeo, and multiple regional television and news platforms throughout Texas and Oklahoma.
Tough DrawFor Hughes, those moments reinforced something important.
“You realize pretty quickly the film was never just ours,” he said. “It belonged to the people who loved Lane, the people who grew up inspired by him, and the next generation discovering his story for the first time.”
That realization helped shape what would come next.
The process of making the documentary laid the groundwork for Tough Draw’s broader vision—one centered on athlete relationships, storytelling, authenticity, and a deep respect for Western culture.
The connections built during the film led directly to opportunities across podcasting, athlete representation, and live events.
Tough DrawIn many ways, the documentary became a bridge.
Not just between generations of rodeo fans, but between storytelling and the future of Tough Draw itself.
“Lane’s story still resonates because it was never just about winning,” Hughes said. “It was about the way he treated people, the way he carried himself, and the impact he left on the sport and the people around him. That’s something that still matters today.”
Today, LANE: Life | Legend | Legacy remains available to rent digitally through the Tough Draw and Lane Frost Brand websites, with additional streaming distribution opportunities being explored. Physical releases are also under consideration as the team continues to find new ways to share the story.
Tough DrawFor Tough Draw, the documentary is more than a completed project.
It’s the origin point.
Because while Lane Frost’s legacy helped shape the sport of rodeo, the experience of telling his story helped define the mission behind Tough Draw.
And years later, that mission continues forward—guided by the same belief that started it all: Stories matter.
