Sometimes the slow build creates the most dangerous athletes, all the way from the ground up.
Not every career in rodeo takes off right away.
Some are built slower—through years of figuring it out, pushing through setbacks, and staying committed long enough for things to finally click. TJ Gray’s path has followed that arc, and it’s part of what makes his rise stand out in the world of Western sports.
The Oregon native didn’t come up through the ranks as a clear-cut prodigy. In fact, there were stretches early in his career where success felt uncertain at best.
“I was not always very good,” Gray admitted. “I didn’t have a lot of natural ability. There were a lot of years where it was looking like it wasn’t gonna go very good for me.”
What changed wasn’t just his riding—it was his perspective.
And by the time the 2025 season arrived, that shift had turned into one of the most complete performances in professional rodeo.
TJ Gray - Tough DrawA Season That Changed Everything
Gray’s second appearance at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo made a serious statement about his place in the elite ranks of rodeo greats.
Over ten rounds in Las Vegas, he put together a performance defined by consistency, composure, and the ability to deliver when it mattered most. He placed in seven rounds and won three, including back-to-back wins in Rounds 7 and 8 before closing out the Finals with another winning finish in Round 10.
He posted a 90.5-point ride aboard Blue Duck in Round 7, backed it up with a 90.75 on Doze You Down in Round 8, and followed it with an 88.5 in Round 10 aboard Mr. Priefert.
By the end of the week, Gray had captured the NFR Bull Riding Average title and earned the Top Gun Award, by receiving the highest earnings of any contestant in Las Vegas with a $329,662 payday. He finished the season No. 2 in the PRCA World Standings with more than $500,000 in total earnings.
2025 NFR Average Champ - Tough DrawIt was the kind of performance that establishes a rider at the highest level of the sport.
But for Gray, the shift that led to it had nothing to do with results.
“I just decided I was gonna have fun and enjoy every ride for what it was,” he revealed. “I stopped putting the pressure on myself that if I don’t win, I’m not worthy.”
A Different Approach to the Game
In a sport driven by standings and outcomes, Gray approaches things differently.
He doesn’t build his career around long-term projections or rigid goal-setting. Instead, his focus stays centered on preparation and execution, one ride at a time.
“I’m not a goal setter,” Gray said. “I know what I’m here to do: just handle business one bull at a time.”
For Tough Draw Sports founder Brad Hughes, that mindset is part of what sets Gray apart.
“TJ is one of those guys that understands the bigger picture,” Hughes shared. “Obviously the talent speaks for itself, but what has impressed us most is his perspective and maturity. Last year changed a lot for him, and you can see the confidence and professionalism continuing to grow both inside and outside of the arena.”
That approach—steady, grounded, and built on perspective—is what allows Gray to stay consistent through both momentum and adversity.
Partnerships That Reflect the Approach
As Gray’s career has grown, so has the group of partners behind him—but the way he approaches those relationships has remained consistent.
Leading into the 2025 NFR, Gray added Acumatica as a partner, featuring the brand prominently on his helmet. The timing placed the partnership on one of the sport’s biggest stages, but for Gray, the focus went beyond exposure.
Acumatica - Tough Draw“I was very blessed they picked me up just before the finals,” Gray said. “I decided to try to give them as much exposure as possible.”
That mindset extends across every partnership he takes on.
Gray is backed by a strong group of partners who continue to support his career both inside and outside the arena, including Acumatica, Cooner Wire, CINCH, M2 Ranch, Drop Barrel, as well as Sports and Performance PT.
“I think something that’s pretty neat about all the sponsors I work with is I talk to all of them and we’re all working at the same goal as far as who we are as humans,” he said. “It means more to me to be a good person than a good bull rider.”
It’s a perspective shaped over time, built alongside people and brands who believed in him before the results fully caught up.
That same alignment is part of what led to his partnership with Tough Draw Sports, where the focus extends beyond competition into long-term growth, relationships, and opportunity.
Playing the Long Game
That perspective is already shaping how Gray has approached 2026.
Rather than jumping straight back into competition, he made the decision to step away early and fully address lingering injuries, prioritizing long-term health over immediate results. It’s not the easy choice coming off a season like 2025, but it reflects a broader understanding of what it takes to sustain success.
Yuba City Xtreme Bulls - Tough Draw“You can get so involved in it that you forget the little things,” Gray explained. “A good reset lights that fire again.”
Even with a later start, Gray has already worked his way back inside the Top 20 in the PRCA World Standings.
Outside the arena, 2026 has already brought another major milestone. On May 5, Gray married his longtime girlfriend, Kalona, before the two stepped away for a short honeymoon. Not long after, he was back competing—posting an 87-point ride in his first event back at the Yuba City Xtreme Bulls.
The rhythm is still there.
Gray Wedding - Tough DrawBack to The American
This weekend, Gray returns to one of the biggest stages in Western sports.
After competing at The American last year, he heads back into AT&T Stadium on May 22–23 with a different level of confidence and experience.
And like everything else in his career, the approach remains the same.
Stay present. Compete. Let the results follow.
TJ Gray American 2025 - Tough DrawBuilt for the Long Run
In a sport that often rewards singular moments, TJ Gray is building something more durable.
A career shaped by patience, perspective, and consistency.
The results from 2025 proved what he’s capable of. But more importantly, they showed how he got there—and why it’s sustainable.
Because for Gray, it’s never been about chasing one run. It’s about building something that holds up over time.
