The 2025 professional rodeo season officially came to a close with a new World Champion Breakaway Roper crowned. Alva, Oklahoma's own Taylor Munsell, finished off her amazing season with her very first gold buckle.
Munsell finished off an unforgettable year by winning her first gold buckle, holding off a tight race to the very end of the National Finals Breakaway Roping in Fort Worth, Texas. The top 15 ladies put on a show in Cowtown Coliseum.
Taylor's road to this title was anything but perfect. After a difficult first 5 rounds at the finals, she regrouped on the second night and delivered when it mattered most, keeping herself atop the standings through the most pressure-filled moments of her entire season. After the first five rounds, the odds were stacked against her in reality, but she pushed through like a champion does and finished the job.
Round 6, the first round of the final night proved to be a pivotal shift. Munsell tied for the round win with Beau Peterson with a 2.1-second run. This run also pushed her past a major milestone in history. That check officially set a new season earnings record in breakaway roping.
She continued to add important money through the next few rounds, tying for fifth and sixth in Round 7 and placing sixth in Round 9, keeping herself narrowly ahead of two tough contenders who were refusing to go away.
Entering the final round, the world title was still undecided. Shelby Boisjoli-Meged, the 2023 world champion, remained alive in both the average and world title race. She posted a 2.2, finishing sixth in the round. Moments later, Josie Connor, also still in contention, answered with a fast 2.0, tying for the round lead with Joey Williams.
That left Munsell as the final roper with everything on the line.
She needed a big check in the round to secure the championship outright. Munsell answered the call and matched the 2.0, tying for the round win and earning just over $5,100. This was just enough to lock down the gold buckle by roughly $4,000.
When the dust settled, the final world standings reflects just how close the race had been all year.
The title capped a record-setting season for Munsell, who entered the NFBR wearing the No. 1 back number after an incredible regular season. Though the finals tested her, she stayed composed, trusted her process, and delivered when it it was all on the line.
In a sport where opportunities continue to grow and pressure remains constant, Munsell’s championship run stood as a reminder of what persistence looks like even at the highest level. After a year filled with challenges, adjustments, and defining moments, Taylor Munsell reached the goal she had been chasing, and rode out of Fort Worth with the gold buckle to prove it.
