Portales, New Mexico cowboy Bryce Derrer dominated one of the most unique ropings of the year, claiming the 2025 Cinch Roping Fiesta championship in San Angelo. This win helped launch his 2026 season in winning fashion with him pocketing over $16,000.

Over three rounds, Derrer stayed sharp and steady on the long 20-foot score. He turned in 9.6-second runs to win both the first and second rounds before sealing the deal with a smart, third run to take the average title with 30.9 seconds on three head.

After the roping, Derrer’s gratitude was clear as he took a moment to thank the people behind the scenes who made the event possible this year despite all challenges. “I just want to thank the Lord, and this wonderful community coming out to enjoy this roping,” he said.

Talking to Justin McKee he continued, “It sure has been a tough year.” Derrer was referring back to his 2025 season, which included truck trouble, injured horses, and setbacks that tested him.

Derrer’s talent and ability, however, has never been in question. In 2024, he finished the year as the No. 2 rookie and 17th in the world standings, proving his place among the best. Though 2025 threw some challenges his way, he still finished in the top 40 of the world.

Justin McKee wrapped up their post-win interview, he smiled and said, “We’ll be talking about you at the NFR next year, it's almost a guarantee.”

McKee’s prediction may not be far off. With a strong start, renewed confidence, and inspiring faith guiding his year, Bryce Derrer has officially put the 2026 season, and a first NFR qualification in his sights.

Rain or Shine

The night before the Cinch Roping Fiesta, San Angelo was hit with heavy rain leaving the newly built arena under water and conditions uncertain. Many wondered if the roping could even go on as planned. The San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo committee, along with many volunteers, had been hard at work for hours reshaping the ground. By the time the first calf roper backed into the box, the arena was in good shape.

After his win, Bryce Derrer made sure to acknowledge their dedication during his interview. “Thank you all so much for getting the ground ready,” he said.
