In its 11th year of operation, California's Richest All Girls Roping makes history with a record-breaking number of breakaway roping competitions, awarding big payouts to rodeo's best female ropers.
All-girl rodeos are making a historic mark with more and more being added to the annual pro rodeo list. One of the favorite stops for female ropers is the annual California’s Richest All Girls Roping rodeo in Tres Pinos, California. This year, for its 11th year of operation, that drew a record-breaking 100 breakaway ropers, as well as countless of the world’s top female team ropers.
This rodeo is clearly a favorite for female ropers, and for good reason. The rodeo holds the name of California’s Richest for a reason, offering payouts of up to $7,000 in payouts, including the opportunity to win non-cash prizes such as a new horse trailer. Events offering sizable payouts for women are hard to come by, making the California’s Richest a rare gem.
With over 100 breakaway ropers, the competition was not an easy one. A long day of competition offered girls the chance to showcase their best with each of their four outs. However, at the end of the event, it was Grace Sutton who was able to take the cake with her blistering aggregate time of 15.36 seconds on four head.
This was a truly incredible day of competition for Grace, putting nearly a full second of separation between her and the runner-up, Shaylee Baxley. Not only did Grace win the breakaway roping event, but she also became the first cowgirl to win the additional prize of a new horse trailer; a tradition that California’s Richest All Girls Rodeo hopes to continue in the years to come.
Subsequently, there are two more event winner who must be recognized. Markie Battaglia and Mandy Niesen were the team roping champions at the 11th annual California’s Richest All-Girls Roping. Women in team roping is something the rodeo community is getting to see more and more of, with riders like DeAnna Thompson and Mindy Haigh setting records and pre-qualifying for the 2027 PWR Championship.
Battaglia and Niesen’s victory in California is not only a victory offering a payout, it’s also an opportunity for them to take yet another step forward in furthering the reach of women in rodeo.
Overall, California’s Richest All Girls Roping was an extremely successful event that helped to showcase some of the best female rodeo athletes. All-girls rodeos such as this are sure to become increasingly more common as more people take active steps in creating more monetary opportunities for female rodeo athletes; a change that many are thrilled to see taking place.
