The 12th annual Johnny Wayne Hampton Memorial Breakaway Roping drew a strong field of breakaway ropers to the Doty Rodeo Complex in Stephenville, Texas, for one of the most respected breakaway events in the region.

The roping honors the memory of Johnny Wayne Hampton, as well as JJ Hampton’s late brother, mother, and other family members and friends from the rodeo community who made a lasting impact on the sport and on JJ’s life. The memorial has grown immensely over the years, becoming one of the biggest-paying and most charitable jackpots held annually.

This year, 3-time National Finals Breakaway Roping (NFBR) Qualifier, Hali Williams claimed the top spot with a wicked 2.18-second run, securing the 2025 Johnny Wayne Hampton title and more than $10,000 in prize money. Close behind was Cadee Williams with a 2.47. Each contestant ran two calves, with their fastest time counting in the main jackpot, which paid 10 places. The average side pot was won by Quealy Probst with 5.88 seconds on two head.

The event also served as an American Qualifier, where Lari Dee Guy and Hope Thompson punched their tickets to the West Region semifinals. It was also a Rope For The Crown Qualifier. Since Hali Williams was already qualified, the Johnny Wayne Hampton Memorial will be represented by Alee Andrews, who finished third in the jackpot with a 2.48.

JJ Hampton, a 17-time world champion and one of the most accomplished cowgirls in breakaway roping history, shared her gratitude on social media following the event:

“What an amazing day! We handed out a lot of money and had a great day of fellowship with so many friends and family!” JJ said, “I cannot thank you enough for the support each and everyone has shown! I am truly blessed. To the workers and to the contestants, you are all AMAZING! I hope everyone enjoyed their day as much as I did!”

The memorial roping operates as a nonprofit, with all proceeds benefiting scholarships and the Backpack Buddies of Erath County program. Each year, the event’s donation-based bake sale also adds to the funds distributed to local causes.

Hampton also helps coach the breakaway ropers for the Tarleton State University Rodeo Team through the season. Known for her encouragement and positivity, she is always the first to cheer every girl on. After the jackpot, she held two scholarship ropings — one for high school seniors and another for the Tarleton ladies.

Now in its 12th year, the Johnny Wayne Hampton Memorial Breakaway remains a favorite for breakaway ropers and fans alike. Hampton’s dedication to producing a great event and supporting all of the ladies is inspiring as she continues to be a trailblazer in the sport.
