Rodeo Austin is already rolling, and it didn’t take long for it to get tough. In this small coliseum, fast times and big scores are expected and this year we are already seeing records being broken.
James Arviso and Rance Doyal made one of the fastest runs you’ll ever see in the team roping. They stopped the clock in 3.2 seconds. This not only gave them the arena record but also tied the all time team roping world record.
That alone is enough to get your attention, but what really makes this special is who was on the heels. Rance Doyal has already been part of that 3.2 before.
Last summer, he and Mason Appleton set that mark at the Snake River Stampede in Nampa, Idaho, and now he’s back at it again, this time with a completely different header, tying his own record. That’s not something you see everyday.
Team roping is all about timing and feel between two guys, and everything has to come together just right. There are two horses, two guys, two ropes, and one steer. For Doyal to hit that record with someone new says a lot about how solid he is on the back end of the run. He sure can stop the clock. Two runs, both world record setting, and Rance is the constant.
On the head side, James Arviso is continuing to prove he belongs right where he is. After winning the 2025 Rookie of the Year, he’s carried that momentum straight into this season. Runs like this are exactly why he’s one to keep an eye on as the year goes on.
Both of these guys are sitting inside the Top 15 in the world right now, working toward what would be their first NFR qualification, and moments like this go a long way in that race.
Both of these young talents have a lot of family history in the rodeo arena. You might recognize the name of Derrick Begay, 12 time NFR qualifer? Well that is James Arviso uncle. Royd Doyal, Rance's father was an NFR qualifier bull rider. Now this team is red hot, working their way to Vegas themselves in 2026.
Tanner Tomlinson and Coleby Payne are leading the average in Austin right now with a 7.5 on two head. That 3.2 for Arviso and Doyal leads round number 1. Tomlinson and Payne were 3.5 seconds to lead round 2.
