After winning the Salinas Rodeo, two-time PRCA All-Around World Champion Shad Mayfield made good on a promise to one of his biggest young supporters, proving that sometimes the most meaningful victories happen long after the arena lights go out.
For Shad Mayfield, winning the prestigious California Rodeo Salinas marked far more than another championship buckle.
It marked a comeback.
Just months after undergoing hip surgeries, the two-time PRCA All-Around World Champion captured what he described as his first major victory since returning to competition. Mayfield secured the California Rodeo Salinas tie-down roping championship with a 30.3-second aggregate time on three head, earning $8,210. While the rodeo win was significant in its own right, it was what happened afterward that resonated throughout the rodeo community.
Before the rodeo, Mayfield had made a playful wager with a young fan named Waylon.
If Mayfield won the Salinas Rodeo, he promised he would buy Waylon a Segway.
When Mayfield roped his way to the championship, he didn't forget the bet.
Sharing the moment on social media, Mayfield presented Waylon with the promised gift, captioning the video, "A bet is a bet. Thanks for believing in me, Waylon."
The heartfelt gesture quickly drew praise from rodeo fans, who applauded Mayfield not only for honoring his word but also for taking time to create a lasting memory for one of the sport's youngest supporters.
Professional rodeo is often measured by championships, earnings and world standings, but moments like these serve as a reminder that athletes can leave an equally lasting impact outside the arena.
For young fans, interactions with rodeo competitors often become lifelong memories that strengthen their connection to the Western way of life. Whether signing autographs after a performance, posing for photos or sharing words of encouragement, contestants frequently embrace the opportunity to inspire the next generation.
Mayfield's promise to Waylon reflected that tradition.
After battling through injuries and rehabilitation, his Salinas victory represented a major milestone in his return to competition. Rather than celebrating the accomplishment alone, he chose to share it with a young fan whose belief never wavered.
The exchange also highlighted the unique relationship between rodeo athletes and their supporters. Unlike many professional sports, rodeo provides fans with frequent opportunities to meet competitors face to face, building personal connections that often extend well beyond the competition itself.
For Waylon, the Segway was the reward for believing in his favorite cowboy.
For Mayfield, keeping his promise became another victory, one that couldn't be measured by money or standings.
As he continues his push toward another National Finals Rodeo qualification, Mayfield's Salinas championship will be remembered as an important step in his comeback. For one young fan, however, the lasting memory won't be the winning run.
It will be the moment a world champion proves that, in rodeo, a handshake and even a friendly bet are still worth keeping.
