Will 2026 finally be the year he ties for the most steer wrestling world titles of all time? Time will only tell!
With 11 NFR qualifications and five World Championships to his name, Tyler Waguespack has long established himself as one of the most accomplished steer wrestlers of all time. Now, as he heads into the crucial summer run, Waguespack finds himself in familiar territory – sitting atop the world standings and positioning himself for another gold buckle in December.
The Louisiana cowboy has built a career on consistency and an unmatched ability to perform under pressure. Since securing his first world title in 2016, he has remained a dominant fixture in the sport, adding additional world championships to his resume in 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2023. His consistency has been on display again this year, with nearly $100,000 in earnings and a $12,000 buffer between himself and the number two cowboy, Holden Myers.
Just as important as the lead itself is Waguespack's familiarity with what comes next. The stretch from June through August features some of the biggest rodeos and largest payouts of the season. This is where we’re going to see the most standing changes and get a better idea of who we’re going to see at the NFR, as well as who’s in real contention for a gold buckle.
Now, let’s take a look at the current Steer Wrestling World Standings:
1. Tyler Waguespack – $96,646.11
2. Holden Myers – $84,045.76
3. Mike McGinn – $60,002.10
4. Cash Robb – $58,912.64
5. Stetson Jorgensen – $52,088.15
6. Tyke Kipp – $52,058.73
7. Bridger Anderson – $48,689.66
8. Jesse Brown – $48,466.77
9. Colin Fox – $48,160.37
10. Trisyn Kalawaia – $46,399.75
11. J.D. Struxness – $45,593.81
12. Chase Crane – $43,631.02
13. Gavin Soileau – $41,805.98
14. Dalton Massey – $41,065.16
15. Seth Peterson – $40,934.68
Securing a six world title would tie him with Homer Pettigrew for the most in PRCA history – a record that has stood since the 1940’s. Pettigrew still holds the steer wrestling record for both total world championships and consecutive world championships, winning six titles overall and four straight. He earned those six world titles within an eight-year span, 1940–1948, and finished second in the world in 1947, 1949, and 1950, establishing himself as the dominant steer wrestler of his era.
If he can maintain his current momentum through rodeo's busiest months, the conversation around the greatest steer wrestlers of all time may become even more interesting in Las Vegas.
