Champions were crowned Saturday night at the West of the Pecos Rodeo as competitors battled for more than $317,000 in prize money at the "World's First Rodeo."
Another chapter of rodeo history has been written at the West of the Pecos Rodeo as champions were crowned at the "World's First Rodeo." Dating back to 1883, the iconic PRCA event once again brought together many of the sport's top athletes and thousands of fans for four days of competition, western tradition, and community celebration in the heart of West Texas.
Marvin Fisher claimed the all-around cowboy title with $5,800 earned in team roping and steer roping. Cole Franks delivered one of the top rides of the week in bareback riding, scoring 90 points on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo's Scarlet Dunn It to earn $6,416 and the championship. Franks' ride was one of only two 90-point rides recorded during the rodeo and separated him from a field that included Roedy Farrell and Garrett Shadbolt, who split second with matching 87-point rides.
Lefty Holman topped the saddle bronc riding with 88.5 points on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo's River's Ghost to collect $6,655. Holman's winning ride edged Jake Finlay and Statler Wright, who each covered 88-point rides to tie for second.
In the timed events, Darcy Kersh captured the steer wrestling average in 10.1 seconds on two head to win $3,799, while Clay Tryan and Kelby Frizzell claimed the team roping average with a 15.3-second aggregate and $4,225 apiece. Their victory came in a field loaded with National Finals Rodeo caliber competition and was decided by less than two seconds.
West Smith was one of the week's most consistent performers in tie-down roping. Smith won the average in 19.6 seconds on two heads and earned $4,980 after also placing in both rounds of competition. In barrel racing, Jimmie Smith posted the fastest time of the rodeo, stopping the clock in 17.19 seconds to earn $6,208, beating Kim Squires by just one-hundredth of a second.
Riley O'Rourke claimed the steer roping average title in 37.0 seconds on three head and earned $3,142, while Tristan Mize recorded the highest-marked ride of the entire rodeo in bull riding. Mize covered Penthouse Pro Rodeo's Hell At Night for 90.5 points and collected $6,796.
The historic PRCA event paid out a total of $317,259 and once again brought together many of the sport's top competitors at one of rodeo's most prestigious summer stops. Dating back to 1883, the West of the Pecos Rodeo continued its legacy of producing memorable performances and crowning champions at the "World's First Rodeo."
Breakaway roping results were officially posted following the rodeo, with Haiden Thompson claiming the average title in 6.9 seconds on two head to earn $3,382. The breakaway roping paid out a total of $34,310, further highlighting the event's growing prominence at one of professional rodeo's most historic stops.
