Three time National Finals Breakaway Roping qualifier Cheyanne McCartney is showing off, more than usual. This year she has now won two notorious ropings: the Spicer Gripp and the Windy Ryon. Both of these wins are on any roper’s bucket list to win.

This is her third time competing at both ropings. “To rope against over a hundred girls anywhere and be the champion means a lot. Especially at an iconic roping like these two.” says McCartney. In the past few years breakaway roping has become insanely tough. There are so many girls who rope well and have incredible equine athletes.

McCartney’s horse was trained by her husband, Cody. He is a six year old who won over $100,000 at the futurities just in the last year. His derby year is off to a great start as they won the Roping Futurities of America in the breakaway and the breeders incentive at the Gold Buckle Futurities in the tie-down roping.

McCartney grew up in central Louisiana and has always been around horses. Her dad roped calves which sparked her interest and devotion to the sport. He was also training race horses so she saw many sides of competition.

As of now her favorite win to this day is San Juan Capistrano, Calif. in 2022. She needed to do well there as well as Pendleton, Ore. to make the NFBR. She took home the reserve championship and Pendelton and secured her spot.

The mental toughness to win is where winners set themselves apart from the rest. “If nothing else you have to have grit, determination, and the right attitude. There is always going to be challenges to overcome, but if you have the right attitude and the will to get it done you can!” says McCartney.

It is obvious that she handles herself well both in the arena and outside of it. As someone who continues to showcase her talents she is one of the greats and we believe one day we will see her win a gold buckle!
