The 2026 Lone Star Shootout marked the end of an era. After nine years as one of the premier Open team ropings in the country, the event crowned its final major Open champions when Tyler Tryan and reigning world champion Jake Long roped three head in 12.14 seconds to win the Jag Metals Open. They took home $70,000 and a pair of Stephenville Trailers Hart trailers.
The Lone Star Shootout has built its reputation on depth. With hundreds of entries each year, the roping is split into multiple rotations over several days before narrowing to a high stakes short round.
Alongside the Open, numbered ropings and incentives also take place, paying significant money and drawing some of the best ropers in the sport.
This year, it was Tyler Tryans to lose. He had several runs back in the short round, but the one with Jake was high call. They watched Kaleb Driggers and Jade Corkill make a smokin run in the short round and had to go after it. They came out the event champs.
For Tryan, the Texas standout and 2024 Resistol Rookie of the Year, the win adds to what has already been a strong start to 2026. He currently sits No. 10 in the PRCA world standings and is positioning himself for a potential first trip to the National Finals Rodeo.
There is also a full-circle storyline attached to the win.
Jake Long is one of the veterans in the sport. He has made the trip to Vegas 15 times, and in 2025 he won his first gold buckle. But the best part, Long made his NFR debut in 2010 roping with Brady Tryan. Now, years later, he captured one of the sport’s biggest Open titles alongside the next generation of the Tryan name.
Jade Corkill had one of the most profitable performances of the event, winning three holes, second, sixth and eighth, to take home more money than any other roper at the Shootout. Tryan also finished eighth alongside Corkill, earning a second top eight check in the Open and leaving Abilene with multiple paydays.
The Lone Star Shootout has been a great event for nearly a decade. It has been a place for both established champions and rising talent to show off and cash in. As the final edition of the iconic Open roping concluded, it did so the same way it has for nine years, with pressure, opportunity and an exciting title at the end.
