Belgium vs Senegal Half Time Thoughts: Senegal Deservedly Ahead

Senegal head into the half-time break in Seattle 1-0 up over Belgium in this Round of 32 tie, and you can't say they don't deserve to be ahead. The game started quite slowly, with neither side willing to take any major risks, but Senegal gradually grew into the game and, early on, demonstrated the danger they pose from crosses. Everton's Iliman Ndiaye played in a great cross, but it was cleared by the Belgian defenders. Two minutes later, however, Senegal almost went 1-0 up, with a cross that was poorly dealt with by Thibaut Courtois falling to Ismaïla Sarr, whose effort was only good enough to hit the post. Just before the hydration break, the Lions of Teranga got their breakthrough, when a Sarr header from a cross once again hit the post, but Habib Diarra was quickest to react, tucking home the rebound to put them ahead. Senegal's defence has been shaky at the World Cup so far, but it has held firm against Belgium's relatively poor attacks, which have been limited to half-chances and long shots. Jeremy Doku, who has disappointed at the World Cup so far, showed some glimpses of what he can do towards the end of the half, finding some space in the box for a shot. Instead, he went for a cross which deflected off the defender and almost looped over the goalkeeper. Charles De Ketelaere has also struggled to impose any threat in the opening 45 minutes, failing to get much time on the ball, something which has unfortunately been the case throughout the tournament. Belgium have scored all but one of its goals so far at this tournament in the second half of games, but there will be plenty for Rudi Garcia to think about at the break, as Senegal leads Belgium by one goal to nil.

New Zealand vs Belgium Half-Time Thoughts: Leandro Trossard The Difference Maker

Belgium enter the half-time break 1-0 up over New Zealand, as the Red Devils currently sit second in Group G with five points. In what was a must-win game for New Zealand, they now need two goals to stand any chance of making it to the knockouts. Rudi Garcia's men showed an intensity in the first half that hadn't been seen in the first two games of their World Cup campaign, with Kevin De Bruyne in particular looking impressive. Leandro Trossard has been a major threat, having a couple of chances to put the Red Devils ahead. His best came just after the ten-minute mark when a low shot from a tight angle hit the inside of the post, with the New Zealand defence scrambling to clear the ball as it rolled along the goal-line. Just before the hydration break, Belgium thought they had a penalty when Trossard's effort hit the arm of New Zealand's Finn Surman, but after being sent to the monitor, the referee overturned his original decision, ruling that the defender's arm was in a natural position. The Arsenal forward finally got what his first-half performance deserved when a De Bruyne corner just after the hydration break was very poorly defended, with the 31-year-old being quickest to react, and finished from close range. After missing Belgium's 0-0 draw with Iran through a respiratory problem, Jeremy Doku has been a little off the pace. Despite starting on the right wing, the Manchester City winger and Trossard occasionally switched sides to keep the New Zealand defence guessing. With the threat Doku does possess however, New Zealand have been doubling up on him, freeing up space for the rest of Belgium's forward line. As Belgium looked for a second goal before the half-time break, De Bruyne blazed an effort from inside the box over, before Crocombe made a good stop to deny Charles de Ketelaere.

Belgium 0-0 Iran Half Time Thoughts: Iran Pose Major Set-Piece Threat As Belgium Struggle

It's all square at the break in Los Angeles, with neither team being able to break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes. Belgium dominated large portions of the half, having 80% possession, but struggled to break down an Iranian backline that at times had six players lined up in defence. Despite their dominance, it was Iran that had the best chance of the half, after Belgium failed to clear their lines from a long throw-in. The ball eventually fell to Hossein Kanaani, whose effort was saved well by Thibaut Courtois. We almost saw a replica of the Netherlands' very well-worked free-kick routine against Argentina in 2022, which was finished by Wout Weghorst, when Ehsan Hajsafi faked to shoot, before finding Mehdi Taremi, who turned brilliantly. He produced an excellent finish to beat Courtois, but was unfortunately marginally offside. Many were surprised to see Romelu Lukaku starting this game, given his fitness issues. The 33-year-old looked off the pace and misplaced several passes. On the other hand, Kevin De Bruyne has been much more influential in this game than against Egypt. Given the freedom to roam, De Bruyne has been everywhere across the front line, as he attempted to unlock the firm Iranian defence. He almost opened the scoring for the Red Devils, but his effort, heading for the bottom corner, was blocked. In the absence of Jeremy Doku, both Leandro Trossard and Alexis Saelemaekers have looked good but have failed to make the most of their dominance in the first half. A massively important 45 minutes ahead for Rudi Garcia's men, who will be desperate to get their first win on the board as they look to establish themselves as the top side in Group G. Iran, on the other hand, will be happy with a point, and will be encouraged by how their defence has been able to shut out Belgium's threat.
