Mohamed Salah’s inspired form puts the Pharaohs on the brink of history in Seattle, while Iran must dismantle a rigid defense to secure their own knockout dreams.

Egypt take on Iran at Lumen Field in Seattle on Saturday at 8 PM PST (Sunday 4 AM BST)  with a first-ever place in the Round of 32 in sight for both nations.

Match day two saw the race for automatic qualification in Group G blown wide open, with Egypt making the most of Belgium's stuttering start to the World Cup by beating New Zealand 3-1, and now lead the group with four points, two points clear of the Red Devils and their Saturday opponents Iran.

A Man of the Match performance from Mohamed Salah inspired Egypt to record their first-ever win at a World Cup, scoring the goal to put the Pharaohs ahead, before assisting the goal that secured all three points.

Iran on the other hand come into this game off the back of an excellent defensive display against Belgium, holding the European giants to a 0-0 draw.

Alireza Beiranvand made some vital stops against the Red Devils to keep their qualification hopes alive, but will go into the fixture knowing they need a win, which would also see them go top of the group, depending on Belgium's result against New Zealand.

A draw would see them finish on three points, and their 0 goal difference may not be enough to see them go through as one of the top eight third-placed sides at the World Cup.

Team news

Following their maiden World Cup win, Hossam Hassan is unlikely to change his system, which has been a success so far this tournament.

Apart from a shaky start against New Zealand, Egypt's defensive unit has been extremely hard to penetrate. Paired with their counter-attacking threat in Salah, who has thrived in a more central role, and Omar Marmoush, Egypt have the perfect side for a knockout competition, and will pose a real threat to whoever they face in the Round of 32.

Iran will probably line up with the same squad, but Amir Ghalenoei will most likely change the tactical setup, which he deployed against Belgium, where his defence was, at times, a back six to deal with Belgium's attacking threat and midfield dominance.

One boost for Team Melli may be the return of Rouzbeh Cheshmi to the side, who missed the first two games with a hamstring injury. After participating in full training on Wednesday, the 32-year-old is expected to be available for Iran's must-win game.

Prediction

Egypt have already almost guaranteed a historic first-ever trip to the knockouts, but will be looking to build on the momentum they gained against New Zealand, and go into the Round of 32 on a high.

While both sides have been rigid in their defences, the pressure is firmly on Iran to get all three points, and they will be much more attacking-minded in their fixture against Egypt.

Team Malli will have to take risks, opening up space in the Iranian back line that Egypt can exploit.

Even if the game ends in an Egyptian loss, they are more than likely to go through with four points, but a draw will guarantee that, and they will be looking to make another statement.

The pace and quality of Salah and Marmoush on the break could be too much for the Iranian backline to handle, but they won't take too many risks as to not squander a golden opportunity to reach the Round of 32.

Prediction: Egypt 1-0 Iran
