Bayern’s refusal to engage with transfer speculation secures their superstar winger, as the Spanish giants’ recent spending spree effectively closes the door on a blockbuster move.
The Michael Olise and Real Madrid story is a perfect example of how transfer narratives can grow beyond the actual negotiations, but could RB Leipzig’s Diomande deal have indirectly helped Bayern secure Olise’s future?
For months, the Frenchman has been repeatedly linked with the Spanish giants. There have been reports of Madrid monitoring him, speculation around Florentino Pérez, and even suggestions that José Mourinho went all the way to Germany to watch the player. But one thing has remained remarkably consistent throughout the noise: Bayern Munich have never shown any interest in making Olise available.
And that stance now looks increasingly justified.
The first important point is that there was never a concrete offer from Real Madrid. In June, Bayern president Herbert Hainer was particularly blunt, saying Olise was a Bayern player with a long-term contract and that the club was not a selling club. He even suggested that if Madrid wanted to send an offer that had not yet arrived, they could save themselves the effort.
Then came Uli Hoeneß.
When the rumours intensified around the World Cup, Bayern's honorary president essentially closed the door altogether. Asked about the possibility of selling Olise, even for an enormous fee, Hoeneß made the club's philosophy clear: Bayern do not want the money if selling their best players makes the team weaker. He famously joked that even if the “Emperor of China” came for Olise, the answer would still be no.
That is important context because it changes how the current situation should be viewed.
Bayern were not waiting for the right offer before deciding what to do with Olise. They had already decided that selling him was not the plan.
And there was good reason for that.
Olise has gone from an exciting signing from Crystal Palace to one of the central pieces of Bayern's attack and clearly one of the best wingers in the world. His performances have made the club's original €60 million investment look increasingly small, while his age and contract until 2029 give Bayern enormous leverage.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, have made their own decisions.
The Spanish club has invested €125 million + add-ons in Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig and extended Vinícius Júnior until 2032. With Kylian Mbappé, Rodrygo, Diomande, Vinícius, Ibrahim Diaz and Bernardo Silva also in the squad, there is now considerably less room, both financially and sporting-wise, for another blockbuster attacking signing.
That does not mean Real will never want Olise. But it makes a future move considerably harder.
And Bayern are now in the perfect position to take advantage of it.
Rather than worrying about Madrid's next move, the German champions can concentrate on extending Olise's contract and making him an even more permanent part of their project. There is reportedly no urgency because his current deal already runs until 2029.
The irony is that Bayern may have received help from Real Madrid without Madrid doing anything to help them directly.
Bayern held their ground when the speculation was at its loudest. Now the market is moving in their favour.
Real have strengthened elsewhere. Bayern still have Olise under contract. And the club have made it abundantly clear that there is no price at which they are actively looking to sell him.
The next chapter is therefore less about whether Real Madrid can sign Michael Olise and more about whether Bayern can, and will, secure his long-term future.
