Celtic have dealt with plenty of problems this season. There is a recognition by now that the squad is not good enough. The recruitment has not helped them either, as the club have brought in far too many players over the years who are not of the required level. One thing that sometimes gets overlooked amid all this is the injury situation.
Celtic have far too many key players missing. Things would have been difficult for any team in such a situation. Jota has not played in almost a year. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston have both undergone surgeries and might not return this season. Arne Engels has been a recent addition to the injury list. And now, it looks like another name could be added to it.
Celtic did well to come out of Pittodrie Stadium with a 2-1 win, thanks to goals from Kieran Tierney, who has stepped up in recent times, and Benjamin Nygren, who has clearly been the Hoops' biggest threat in front of goal this season despite being a midfielder. Unfortunately, there was some bad news on the day as well.
Dane Murray was set to start the game against Aberdeen, but was pulled out from the starting XI at the last minute and replaced by Benjamin Arthur, who made his first start for Celtic as a result.
According to The Scottish Sun, Murray picked up a knock in the warm-up. Sky Sports later confirmed that the centre-back had sustained an injury to his thigh.
Of course, that leaves Martin O'Neill in an even more difficult situation. Fortunately, Auston Trusty will be available for the quarter-final against the Rangers at Ibrox at the weekend as his suspension only applies to Premiership matches.
That being said, Celtic have more important games coming up. And if Murray's injury leaves him on the sidelines for any considerable length of time, O'Neill will be left working with very little in terms of centre-back options.
Arthur was brought in on loan from Brentford in the winter but has barely featured so far. But now, he could find himself starting in certain matches. Let's just hope that he is up to the task and surprises the doubters with his displays.
For now, the focus should be on their upcoming visit to Ibrox. Both sides showed their positives and negatives in the 2-2 draw at the weekend. Now, it remains to be seen which team will make the better adjustments and come out on top. There has to be a winner this time around.
