Celtic have made plenty of bad signings in recent times. The poor recruitment has been one of the primary reasons behind the deterioration of the squad since the departure of Ange Postecoglou as manager.
While the club had shown efficiency and an eye for talent in their transfer process while Postecoglou was at the helm, that completely vanished after the Australian's departure. It became clear that the recruitment process had not modernised following the 20/21 season and it was back to square one.
The transfer windows, during Brendan Rodgers' second spell at Parkhead, might go down as some of the worst in the club's history. A total 31 players were signed, permanently or on loan. And it is hard to come up with an outright success story.
Nicolas Kuhn was brilliant, but only for a brief period, before moving on. The likes of Auston Trusty, Yang Hyun-jun, Benjamin Nygren and Arne Engels are also proving their worth.
The hits have been few and far between. The flops have been plenty though. And one move that has quite clearly not worked out is the £5 million signing of Michel-Ange Balikwisha made last summer.
Balikwisha had been on the radar of Celtic for more than a year before being signed from Royal Antwerp. It is hard to see what the scouts saw in him though.
Balikwisha has looked completely out of his depth at Celtic. It is hard to think of a moment he has produced which would suggest that this could eventually work out.
The DR Congo international is completely out of first-team plans at the moment. He last appeared in the league back in late October and has not even been included in the matchday squad since mid-December. His last overall appearance for Celtic was in the Scottish Cup against Auchinleck Talbot, a team from the sixth tier.
So, it is pretty clear that Martin O'Neill does not rate Balikwisha highly. And even though the Northern Irishman is set to depart this summer, it is hard to imagine a long-term future for him at Parkhead.
Could a return to Royal Antwerp be on the cards? We don't know. But Balikwisha is certainly maintaining his ties to his former club. In fact, he made an on-pitch visit at the weekend and was given a warm welcome by their home supporters.
It is more than likely that Celtic will be looking to find Balikwisha a new home in the summer. But after how poor his debut campaign with the Hoops has been, they might have a tough time finding him a permanent swithc.
It is very possible that they could choose to send him out on loan in hopes of rebuilding his transfer valuation, as they have done with the likes of Luis Palma, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Maik Nawrocki and a few others.
