Celtic failed to bring back Birmingham City striker Kyogo Furuhashi to Parkhead in the winter transfer window.

Celtic Roundtable Round-up: Martin O'Neill Permanent Manager? Pepple to Celtic?

Kyogo Furuhashi playing at the peak of his powers, that must be a happy memory for most Celtic fans. We witnessed that for two years, when the Japanese forward worked together with Ange Postecoglou, helping the Hoops to five trophies in two years.

Kyogo was the face of the new Celtic team that was built following the disastrous 20/21 season. A beloved figure amongst the supporters, and an extraordinary performer on the pitch.

In his two seasons under Postecoglou, Kyogo scored 54 goals, despite spending a chunk of it out injured. He never replicated that form with Brendan Rodgers as manager, but even then, he managed to score 31 times in a season-and-a-half before leaving for Rennes in early 2025. That is a lot better than whatever is available to the Hoops right now.

So, it was not a real surprise when reports emerged in January that Celtic had held talks over bringing back Kyogo. But they were quickly shut down and the Japanese striker stayed on at Birmingham City.

Unfortunately for Kyogo, things have only gotten worse for him since then. He has not featured in the last five league games for Birmingham City. And with just three goals in 29 appearances for the club, it is not hard to understand why.

According to Football Insider, journalist Pete O'Rourke has now said about his situation:

“I think it’s probably looking more and more likely that Kyogo will end up leaving Birmingham come the summer. He’s fallen down the pecking order at St Andrew’s.

“Birmingham did spend quite a bit in the January window to strengthen their attacking options, so he’s found himself a bit out of favour under Chris Davies in recent weeks.

“Kyogo just hasn’t been able to show his best form at Birmingham. He’s only got three goals in 29 appearances, so hasn’t been able to recapture the form that he showed in his time at Celtic.”

Considering how things have played out over the last couple of months, it might have been best for all parties if Kyogo had ended up back at Celtic in January.

Celtic did sign two strikers on loan in the winter. But neither Tomas Cvancara nor Junior Adamu has shown that they are capable of finding the back of the net consistently. That is something Kyogo did during his three-and-a-half seasons with the Hoops, scoring 85 times.

As for Birmingham City, they might have had an easier time recouping a large portion of whatever they paid to sign Kyogo as well. Now, with an entire season of poor play, alongside the failed stint at Rennes before that, it might be hard to convince clubs to invest in signing the 31-year-old in the summer.

If Kyogo does become available in the summer, should Celtic make another move? That is a complicated one, to be honest. The Hoops might be looking to completely rebuild their strike force though. Cvancara, Adamu and Kelechi Iheanacho are all expected to leave at the end of the season. In that circumstance, handing one of the empty squad spots to the Japanese club hero might not be a bad idea.
