Martin O'Neill Drops Update on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's Celtic Debut cover image

Martin O'Neill has shared when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could make his debut for Celtic, having arrived this month as a free agent.

Celtic are coming off another tough transfer window, in which the minimum expectations might not have been met. The Hoops completed five signings, but all were loan deals. Julian Aruajo was brought in from Bournemouth while Wilfried Nancy was still the manager. Tomas Cvancara ended up being Martin O'Neill's first addition, followed by late window moves for Junior Adamu, Joel Mvuka and Benjamin Arthur.

In fact, Celtic's only permanent signing of the winter has been Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The former Arsenal and Liverpool man had been a free agent since his contract was terminated by Besiktas in August of last year.

Naturally, a lot of eyebrows have been raised by the move. With not much time left in the season, Celtic needed players who could hit the ground running. Chamberlain is someone who has been without a club for the last six months or so.

Of course, it is a low-risk move. Chamberlain has only been handed a deal until the end of the season with an option for a further year. But the best-case scenario would be if it all works out.

There is an update on when Chamberlain could make his Celtic debut. And it might be a lot earlier than most would have anticipated.

While speaking at a media conference before the game against Livingston, O'Neill was asked whether Chamberlain could feature and the manager said: "We will have a look at that later on today. I haven't picked the squad yet, but yeah, there's a possibility."

It would be safe to say that Chamberlain is one of the most high-profile names that Celtic have signed in recent memory. He came through the Southampton youth system but earned himself a move to Arsenal after just one full season of League One football.

He spent the next six years at Arsenal, making 198 appearances for them before making a move to Liverpool. He then appeared 146 times for the Reds over his six seasons at Anfield.

So, Chamberlain spent more than a decade playing for two of the biggest clubs in the world. He won 11 trophies during that period of time, including the Champions League and the Premier League.

There is no question about Chamberlain's pedigree. And at 32 years of age, one would imagine that he should have a decent bit of football left in the tank. The move has been met with a lot of negativity, but it could prove to be a masterstroke. if the Englishman is up for the challenge.
