Celtic went into the winter transfer window knowing that they needed to add to their striker ranks. They did so by bringing in a couple on loan, both from the Bundesliga. Tomas Cvancara arrived from Borussia Monchengladbach, while Adamu Junior was signed from SC Freiburg.
It would be safe to say that neither was in form prior to their move to Celtic. Cvancara had scored twice in 13 games while on loan at Turkish side Antalyaspor in the first half of the season before it was cut short and he headed to Parkhead. On the other hand, Adamu Junior had managed two goals in 17 outings for SC Freiburg.
Celtic are believed to hold options to buy in both loan deals though. For Cvancara, it is reported to be around €7 million, while for Adamu Junior, the figure is a slightly lower €5 million.
Both have already opened their account in Celtic colours without being particularly impressive. So, it remains to be seen what the future holds for them.
Cvancara, for his part, seems to be eyeing a permanent move to Celtic in the summer. He recently sat down for an interview with the club's official YouTube, as he said: "I want to prove myself and prove why I came. Maybe, if I’m going to be good enough to show the board and everyone that they have to sign me for the future. So, this is my goal for the future. I will just try to do my best."
Cvancara already has a goal and a couple of assists to his name for Celtic in five appearances. He was the one who assisted Julian Araujo's 97th-minute winner against Kilmarnock away at Rugby Park before celebrating with the supporters, a clear sign that he is enjoying his start to life at Parkhead.
If there is to be any chance of Celtic taking up that €7 million option to buy, Cvancara will have to score goals on a consistent basis. Otherwise, the club will try to negotiate on the fee or look to sign somebody else altogether.
It is worth mentioning though that Celtic will probably be looking to sign multiple strikers in the summer. Daizen Maeda is expected to leave, having been denied an exit this season. On the other hand, Johnny Kenny and Shin Yamada, the club's two strikers in the first half of the season, are now out on loan. Kelechi Iheanacho has struggled with both fitness and form, and it looks unlikely that the option to extend his contract will be taken up unless things improve drastically.
So, all things combined do increase Cvancara's chances of making a permanent move to Celtic in the summer. Now, it is up to him to show he is capable of leading the line for the Hoops.
