The 2-1 win over Aberdeen saw Celtic climb over the Rangers in the Premiership table. They are sit five points behind surprise leaders Hearts, with nine games left to be played. But it is expected that there will be a few more twists and turns in this league title race before it is all said and done.
Celtic would probably have been top of the table right now, if they had stuck with Martin O'Neill throughout and not appointed Wilfried Nancy at all.
Nancy lost six of his eight games in charge of Celtic. On the other hand, O'Neill has delivered positive results, even though the performances have not always been up to the mark.
Celtic will once again be saying goodbye to O'Neill at the end of the season, when his interim run comes to an end. Of course, there can always be a twist in the tale. That being said, the Northern Irishman is now 74 years of age. He is not going to be the long-term answer to the club's problems, even though he has been able to steady the ship.
Who will be the one to replace O'Neill in the summer as the club's new permanent manager? It looks like two names are leading in the race for the Parkhead job.
According to Football Insider, Jens Berthel Askou is one of two leading candidates for the Celtic role alongside Roberto Martinez.
Askou has done a tremendous job at Motherwell. They are just five points behind Celtic, with a game in hand. So, if the Rangers are being considered title contenders, the same has to be said of the Fir Park outfit.
Askou has got them playing an enjoyable brand of football. At the same time, they are winning and have the best defensive record in the Scottish Premiership by quite some distance, having conceded just 18 times in 28 games.
On the other hand, Martinez is the current manager of the Portugal national team. His contract is believed to run out after the World Cup.
Of course, a lot will depend on what happens in the summer tournament. That being said, there are already rumours that Portugal are already eyeing Jose Mourinho for the national team job. He is expected to be offered the post after the World Cup.
Martinez would be a big-name appointment for sure. He has managed both the Belgian and Portuguese national teams. He also had a decent spell at Everton and won the FA Cup with Wigan Athletic, exceeding all expectations.
Both Askou and Martinez have the potential to be decent Celtic managers. Most importantly, they are proven in the European game, something that Nancy was not before his appointment.
