The Chelsea Blues have been active during the summer transfer period and they added a solid midfielder in Facundo Buonanotte. Buonanette will be on a season-long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, adding another tactical piece for Chelsea at this time.
What type of player has Buonanette been? For Leicester City last season, he scored six goals and added three assists in 35 games, according to The Athletic. Chelsea fans are used to seeing the Blues and Brighton make moves between the teams in recent seasons.
For instance, Joao Pedro moved from Brighton to Chelsea this summer. Others who have shifted from Brighton to Chelsea also include Moises Caicedo, Robert Sanchez and Marc Cucurella. Graham Potter was Chelsea's manager back in 2022, coming to the squad from Brighton.
The team was looking for an attacking midfielder and had their eyes somewhat set on picking up RP Leipzig's Xavi Simons. Now, though, Simons appears to be en route to Tottenham Hotspur.
What does this move to acquire Buonanette mean in the long term? The Athletic's Premier League analyst Thom Harris offers some insights.
"Though a diminutive attacking midfielder, Buonanotte did not shy away from defensive work, attempting more tackles per 90 minutes than any other teammate," Harris wrote about Buonanette's time at Leicester City.
"As always, Chelsea are spinning plenty of plates in the transfer market, but a temporary move for Buonanotte provides short-term cover in that No 10 position at a low cost, while the club monitor the progress of others," Harris wrote. "But given their track record in recent windows, don’t rule out a concurrent deal for another creative midfield target."
The Premier League summer transfer window closes on Monday, Sept. `1. It's possible that Chelsea isn't done acquiring players before that time. The Blues hope that Buonanette and other players they've managed to add at this time will help them.
