Chelsea fans picked up some good news for a bit on Tuesday, Sept. 2, when the Blues signed Ishe Samuels-Smith. But the club immediately loaned him out to Swansea City. Things did not work out well at Strasbourg for him.

This deal, which was announced after the summer transfer window closed on Monday, Sept. 1, comes after Samuels-Smith had signed a permanent deal with Strasbourg. He reportedly had agreed to a €7.5m + €0.5m add-ons deal.

Back in 2023, Samuels-Smith had joined Chelsea from Everton for £4million (now $5.4m).

What fell through at Strasbourg? According to The Athletic, when Samuels-Smith saw defender Ismael Doukoure staying at Strasbourg with a new deal through June 2028, that didn't obviously sit well with him.

While Chelsea fans have not seen him play for the big club yet, Samuels-Smith has been a captain for the Under-21s. Back in April 2025, Chelsea said that he had signed a new contract that would run until 2031.

It was reported on Sept. 1 that Samuels-Smith was going to Swansea City on loan.

Samuels-Smith did have a spot on the bench for a Strasbourg game but did not appear on the pitch.

But on Tuesday, Strasbourg and Chelsea posted statements that said the defender was coming back to Chelsea.

According to The Athletic, Samuels-Smith was one of six Chelsea players to head over to Strasbourg. Mike Penders, Kendry Paez and Mamadou Sarr joined Strasbourg on loan. Samuels-Smith, Mathis Amougou and Ben Chilwell signed permanently with the Blues.

Samuels-Smith will now play for Swansea City. His play might be something worth watching as Premier League action continues this season.
