Joao Pedro delivered the goods for Chelsea on Wednesday evening, and as a result has been recognised by the Premier League with this nomination.

On Wednesday evening, Chelsea pulled off an important win in their bid for UEFA Champions League football, as they defeated Aston Villa 4-1 on the road in a hugely important six pointer.

After a rocky start to the game, Liam Rosenior's side grew in confidence after a second Villa goal was ruled out for offside, and their class really started to show in the second half.

A huge contributor to the win was Joao Pedro, who scored his first hat-trick for the club. Furthermore, he was credited with the assist for Cole Palmer's goal, so he ended up with a goal or an assist for all four goals. Pretty good.

As a result, the Brazilian has been recognised by the Premier League, with a nomination for the Player of the Matchweek award for round 29 of the campaign.

He joins Omar Alderete of Sunderland, Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest, Andre of Wolves, Idrissa Gueye of Everton, Aaron Ramsdale of Newcastle United, Crysencio Summerville of West Ham United, and Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace.

Some of those players had excellent performances, it should be said, but surely the hat-trick (and assist) from Pedro will see him win this particular award, but we will wait and see.

It's been great to see the 24-year old's development this season. He was always good at Brighton and Hove Albion - that's why Chelsea signed him - but it feels like he has gone up another level this season.

Whilst playing for Brighton, Pedro used to struggle to be a consistent goalscoring threat from open play. In his first season, 23/24, he accumulated just 7.94 non penalty xG all season, in 2043 minutes.

Then, in 24/25, he accumulated just 4.95 non penalty xG in 1953 minutes of action. In both seasons, he scored five non penalty goals (NPG).

Yet this season, he has already accumulated 13.20 npxG, in only 2155 minutes. A huge increase. Sure, some of that may be due to getting better service from team mates. But he is clearly a much better threat inside the box now.

The tools have always been there. Clean technique, ball striking, a very good physical profile. The next stage in his development was to be able to get better chances from open play, and he has certainly done that.

With plenty of important games coming up both in the Premier League and Champions League, tomorrow's FA Cup clash with Wrexham feels a good opportunity to rest him. As touched on above, he has already played more minutes this season than he did in either of the last two campaigns. Let's keep him fresh.
