Matt Law Calls Out Chelsea's Alarming Discipline Record cover image

Eight red cards and constant suspensions plague Chelsea. Matt Law decries the club's lack of accountability for this self-inflicted disciplinary crisis.

Matt Law was on the "London is Blue" podcast this week, where he discussed an issue that is driving him crazy at Chelsea right now.

Wesley Fofana's red card was a huge factor in the Blues dropping points on Saturday, bringing the team's tally to an incredible eight red cards in all competitions this season.

"Every time we ask someone at the club about the disciplinary issue, they never want to take responsibility. They never want to point the finger at anyone for it. And it's really, really irritating," Law said.

"Because it's killing Chelsea. And it's so ridiculous and avoidable. It might be the first of the Rosenior era. But they have continued to pile up ridiculous yellow cards during Rosenior's time."

"Some of Moises Caicedo's yellow cards have been absolutely crazy. He could be the next player to be suspended. I could see two yellows in his next two games quite easily. This issue is driving me crazy, that they don't get on top of it and they pretend 'oh, it's not that serious'."

Chelsea ranks among the teams with the highest card accumulation in English football. Under the direction of Rosenior, who took over in January following Maresca's departure, the London club has recorded one of the highest numbers of cautions and sendings-off in the competition, which has conditioned the availability of its squad during critical stretches of the season.

As of late February 2026, the "Blues" have accumulated a total of 66 yellow cards and 6 red cards in 27 matches played in the league. This disciplinary trend has been led by Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo, who leads the team with 8 cautions and one sending-off, closely followed by Argentine Enzo Fernandez with 6 yellows and defender Marc Cucurella with 5 cautions and one red.

Other key players such as Malo Gusto, Wesley Fofana, and goalkeeper Robert Sanchez have also received red cards so far in the competition, underscoring a structural problem in the team's defensive containment.

Despite these conduct issues, Chelsea remains in the fight for European places, occupying fifth place in the table with 45 points. However, the frequency of suspensions has forced the coaching staff to make constant rotations, affecting tactical cohesion in matches against direct rivals.

The club's board has expressed concern about the cost of these suspensions, especially given that young figures like Estevao Willian and Cole Palmer have also begun to accumulate cards for protests or obstructions, reflecting the heightened tension surrounding the sporting project at Stamford Bridge.
