Chelsea legend believes his former club must act fast to secure Manchester City's rising star keeper to challenge elite rivals.

Joe Cole has called on his former club to sign a Manchester City goalkeeper. The suggestion comes at a time when Sanchez is facing a fight for his future at Stamford Bridge, with his status as the club’s undisputed No. 1 under threat.

Manager Liam Rosenior recently decided to drop the Spaniard to the bench following a string of inconsistent displays, particularly after his poor performance in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal. The tactical switch has sparked widespread debate over whether the current squad possesses a goalkeeper capable of matching the standards of their title rivals.

Speaking to Paddy Power, Cole believes Chelsea must sign an elite goalkeeper to compete for the title with the likes of Liverpool, City, and Arsenal. “It’s difficult with Robert Sanchez because he’s performed well at times,” Cole said. “The other day, he took the starting spot from Jorgensen. So it doesn’t look like Liam Rosenior has decided who the No. 1 is, as he says ‘he doesn’t have a No. 1.’ That’s how it works.”

The former England international then suggested the Blues should look to sign James Trafford, who is struggling to compete with Gianluigi Donnarumma at the Etihad Stadium. He added, “When a goalkeeper like James Trafford becomes available, Chelsea may need to pounce.

Sanchez is getting better, but I still think there’s another level. Will he be ready in time for Chelsea to step up and compete for the Champions League with teams like Arsenal and Manchester City? Liverpool has Alisson, Manchester City has Donnarumma, and Arsenal has David Raya. That’s the level of goalkeeper Chelsea needs. Sanchez can reach that level, but can he do it quickly enough?”

The decision to drop Sanchez for the 4-1 victory over Aston Villa highlighted Rosenior’s philosophy of “horses for courses.” While the Spaniard was reportedly “really disappointed” to lose his place, the manager has praised the professionalism shown behind the scenes.

“I’ve been really honest with Rob,” Rosenior explained. “He was really disappointed not to play, which is what I expect from all players, whether they’re goalkeepers or outfield players. But the way Rob responded in training, the way he supported Filip in the warmup, in the dressing room, was magnificent.”
