Victorious a week ago in the first leg of the round of 16 by 5-2, Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Chelsea again on Tuesday, 3-0 in London, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the European Champions League.
Kvicha Kvaratskhelia (6') and Bradley Barcola (14') had the match decided before the first quarter of an hour, and Senny Mayulu (62') decreed the rout for the European champion, silencing Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea, coached since January by Liam Rosenior, finds itself in a delicate situation, eliminated from the League Cup and currently outside the Top 4 of the Premier League.
"A tough night. We knew it was a difficult task, and yet we started the match the way we did," the English manager lamented to TNT Sports.
The match started favorably for the Parisians, after a first goal that came out of nowhere. Senegalese defender Mamadou Sarr seemed to have control of a long ball from Matvey Safonov, but lost it under pressure from Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian took advantage of the gift and beat the Spanish goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
Barely recovered from that blow, another hammer blow came when Moroccan Achraf Hakimi, running forward, easily found Barcola in the area. Already the author of a great goal in the first leg, the 23-year-old attacker scored another fine goal, unreachable for Sanchez despite his dive.
With the aggregate score at 7-2 at halftime, PSG's manager, Spain's Luis Enrique, brought on the young Senny Mayulu, who would not take long to make his mark on the match.
Kvaratskhelia, after a run down the left wing, looked for Hakimi at the edge of the area, who was brought down by a rival defender. The ball landed at the feet of the young player, who shot into the top corner to dispel any hope of a miracle at Stamford Bridge.
The local crowd understood this, and thousands of English fans began to leave the stadium. The tie also had added spice following the Club World Cup final last northern hemisphere summer, in which the Blues defeated the Parisian side 3-0.
The French club arrived with the advantage of having rested this weekend after the postponement of their Ligue 1 match against Nantes. Chelsea did have a match in their domestic championship, suffering a 1-0 defeat at home to Newcastle.
