Jesse Derry is the sensation at Chelsea. An 18-year-old player who has already made the jump to the first team against Hull City. Following his signing last year for the academy, Liam Rosenior decided to give him the opportunity with the senior squad. He has gone from dressing up as the club's mascot at U18 matches to being one of the club's hopes for the future.
Since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, he already shown promise. At Crystal Palace, he was considered one of the best gems, not only of the "Eagles" academy, but of English football. Many clubs were vying for him, but it was Chelsea that secured him with a four-year contract at age 18, according to The Athletic.
Derry's life has taken a 180-degree turn. He has gone from dressing up as Stamford Lion, the club's mascot, to being one of Chelsea's great assets in this new transition. He did it against Manchester City in the U18 match. Since then, his luck changed as a result of his talent in the final third.
Just a few days ago, he made his mark with his debut against Hull City in the FA Cup, on Feb. 13. Only 13 minutes of play were enough for him to catch Rosenior's eye, who has called him up to join the first-team dynamics. He has already been seen in training sessions, where he will continue to display his skill to convince management that this gem status is no coincidence but pure talent.
That quality he possesses is no coincidence; it runs in his blood. Shaun Derry, his father, was also a footballer. He had a long career in England, playing for teams such as Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, and Leeds United.
However, Jesse Derry seems capable of surpassing his father's career, and his father is proud of him. "It's a dream come true to sign for the world champion," he wrote on his social media after his transfer to Chelsea was announced in the summer. Now, only time will tell. Time will be the judge, but the Stamford Bridge faithful are already beginning to get excited about the new English football gem they possess.
