DR Congo rallied from an early deficit to defeat Uzbekistan 3-1 and secure a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32. After falling behind in the opening minutes and seeing a first-half equalizer ruled out by VAR, the Leopards responded with three second-half goals to complete the comeback

Uzbekistan Strike First as DR Congo Frustrated

DR Congo entered its final Group K match knowing only a victory would keep its World Cup hopes alive, but the African side endured a nightmare start.

Uzbekistan thought it had opened the scoring inside the opening minute when Eldor Shomurodov found the back of the net, only for the offside flag to deny the striker. The forward would not have to wait long for redemption. In the 10th minute, a defensive mix-up allowed Shomurodov to latch onto a flicked pass before delicately chipping Lionel Mpasi to hand Uzbekistan a 1-0 lead.

DR Congo believed it had responded midway through the half when Nathanaël Mbuku rifled a long-range effort into the net, but after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out for a foul in the buildup, leaving the Leopards still searching for an equalizer. Despite beginning to control possession and apply pressure, they went into halftime trailing by a goal.

Wissa Sparks the Comeback

DR Congo emerged from the break with renewed urgency and quickly began to pin Uzbekistan deep inside its own half.

The pressure finally paid off in the 66th minute when Abdukodir Khusanov brought down Yoane Wissa inside the penalty area. Wissa stepped up to take the spot kick himself and calmly sent goalkeeper Abduvokhid Nematov the wrong way to bring DR Congo level.

Momentum continued to swing in DR Congo's favor as the attacking substitutions injected fresh energy into the match. Wissa remained at the center of nearly every dangerous attack, while Arthur Masuaku and Aaron Wan-Bissaka repeatedly delivered dangerous balls into the penalty area.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, substitute Meschack Elia burst into the box before seeing his effort deflected into the path of fellow substitute Fiston Mayele, who reacted quickest to fire home from close range and complete the turnaround

Leopards Punch Their Ticket to the Round of 32

Uzbekistan pushed numbers forward in search of a late equalizer, but DR Congo continued to threaten on the counterattack and never allowed its grip on the match to slip.

Deep into stoppage time, Elia once again played a key role by keeping the ball alive before finding Wissa on the edge of the area. The Newcastle United forward shifted onto his right foot and drilled a low finish into the corner, sealing a 3-1 victory and his second goal of the evening.

The final whistle sparked celebrations among the DR Congo players and supporters as the comeback victory secured a place in the Round of 32. After seeing an early equalizer ruled out and trailing at halftime, the Leopards produced an outstanding second-half performance to keep their World Cup dreams alive. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, exits the tournament without a point despite an encouraging start in Atlanta. DR Congo now turns its attention to a Round of 32 showdown with England.
