Wrexham bounced back from their midweek defeat to West Bromwich Albion with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Preston North End at the Racecourse Ground.
Wrexham AFC bounced back from their midweek defeat to West Bromwich Albion with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Preston North End at the Racecourse Ground. Phil Parkinson’s side responded strongly, took control, and secured three Championship points against a Preston North End team struggling at the foot of the table.
Wrexham started positively at the Racecourse Ground, enjoying plenty of possession and looking to create opportunities through Callum O’Hare, Kieffer Moore and Sam Smith.
Phil Parkinson’s side eventually broke the deadlock in the 31st minute when defender Joe Worrall found the net following an assist from Danny Imray, giving the hosts a deserved advantage.
However, Preston responded five minutes later, with former Tottenham midfielder Alfie Devine equalising in the 36th minute to level the score for Graham Alexander’s struggling side.
Wrexham continued pushing forward and regained their advantage three minutes before the interval. Former Preston captain Ben Whiteman struck against his old club in the 42nd minute to restore the home side’s lead.
The midfielder had already received a yellow card earlier in the contest but delivered an important contribution when Wrexham needed it.
Parkinson’s side went into the break 2-1 up, having responded well to Preston’s equaliser and regained control of the scoreline.
Wrexham continued to control proceedings after the interval, and their attacking pressure was rewarded with two goals in four minutes.
Sam Smith extended the hosts’ advantage in the 59th minute, converting Ben Whiteman’s assist to give Phil Parkinson’s side a comfortable two-goal cushion.
Just four minutes later, Kieffer Moore made it 4-1 after an assist from Joe Worrall, who added another important contribution after his earlier goal.
The quick double effectively ended Preston’s comeback hopes, with Graham Alexander’s side struggling to contain Wrexham’s attacking threat.
Parkinson introduced Issa Kaboré for Danny Imray in the 68th minute before making three more changes in the closing stages, with George Dobson, Oliver Rathbone and Bailey Cadamarteri coming on.
Wrexham AFC comfortably managed the remaining minutes to secure three important Championship points, responding perfectly to Tuesday’s disappointing home defeat against West Bromwich Albion. Phil Parkinson got the reaction he called for.
Wrexham AFC return to Championship action on Saturday, October 24, travelling to Ewood Park to face Blackburn Rovers, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm.
Preston North End will look to end their disappointing run as they welcome West Bromwich Albion to Deepdale on the same afternoon, with kick-off at 3pm.
