As Phil Parkinson targets defensive reinforcements, the towering Leicester City center-back could provide the elite aerial dominance and Championship experience needed to fuel another Hollywood promotion charge.
Wrexham AFC have finally opened their summer transfer business with the arrival of Danny Imray, but attention is already turning towards the player who could become the club’s next major addition.
Imray has completed a permanent move from Crystal Palace, signing a four-year contract at the STōK Cae Ras. The 23-year-old wing-back, who spent part of last season on loan with West Bromwich Albion, has become Phil Parkinson’s first new signing of the summer in a deal reportedly worth around £ 5 million.
His arrival provides Wrexham with additional pace, energy and competition on the right side of Parkinson’s preferred system. However, the club’s recruitment is unlikely to stop there as preparations continue for another attempt at reaching the Premier League.
A new centre-back could now emerge as one of Wrexham’s most important remaining priorities, with Leicester City defender Harry Souttar continuing to be linked with a move to North Wales.
WalesOnline has identified Souttar as the potential “missing piece” in Parkinson’s squad, pointing towards Wrexham’s defensive record during the previous campaign. Despite finishing seventh and narrowly missing out on the Championship play-offs, the Red Dragons conceded 65 goals across their 46 league fixtures.
Strengthening the heart of the defence could therefore be essential if Wrexham are to turn last season’s near miss into a genuine promotion challenge.
Souttar would represent another significant statement of ambition from owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac. Standing at 6ft 6in, the Australian international would bring aerial dominance, physical presence and considerable Championship experience to Parkinson’s back line.
The 27-year-old joined Leicester from Stoke City in January 2023, reportedly for an initial £ 15 million. Souttar is now valued at approximately £ 10 million following their relegation to League One.
Wrexham are not alone in monitoring his situation. West Ham United and Sheffield United have also been credited with an interest, while Souttar’s former club Stoke have previously been mentioned as another possible destination. WalesOnline reports that Leicester have rejected an initial proposal for another loan and that discussions regarding a permanent transfer have not yet produced an agreement.
Although a fee of around £10million would represent another large investment, Wrexham demonstrated during their first Championship campaign that they are prepared to spend heavily on players capable of moving the club closer to the Premier League.
His leadership and international experience could also prove valuable. Souttar captained Australia during the 2026 World Cup.
Imray’s arrival has started Wrexham’s summer recruitment by addressing the right wing-back position. Securing Souttar next would tackle an even more important area. After three consecutive promotions and a seventh-place finish last time around, Wrexham no longer need players simply capable of competing in the second tier. They need additions who can help take them into the Premier League.
