Phil Parkinson has paid a heartfelt tribute to Humphrey Ker, recognising the departing board member’s contribution to a period that has transformed Wrexham AFC’s fortunes.

Speaking to The Leader, Parkinson highlighted both Ker’s involvement in bringing Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds to the club and the personal support he has provided since the manager arrived in July 2021. His comments remind us that Wrexham’s extraordinary rise has depended on behind-the-scenes relationships as well as investment and results.

Ker’s departure from the board closes an important chapter, with Wrexham having confirmed that he is also stepping down as a trustee of the Wrexham AFC Foundation after five years with the club.

Ker introduced Mac to the appeal of British football before helping identify a suitable club to purchase. Reynolds later joined the project, and the takeover of Wrexham was completed in February 2021.

Parkinson’s assessment of that turning point was clear: “Let’s be honest, who knows where the club would have been without that.”

The manager’s words capture the significance of Ker’s early involvement. Before the promotions, global recognition and television success, someone had to connect an ownership ambition with a football club whose history, supporters and circumstances made it a compelling choice.

Ker helped make that connection. His contribution belongs in the story of how Wrexham’s modern transformation began.

The most revealing part of Parkinson’s tribute concerns the working relationship that followed.

The manager thanked Ker for supporting him throughout his time at the Racecourse. He described a popular figure whose visits on matchdays and during training weeks were welcomed by the staff, while recognising his understanding of the club and surrounding area.

For a manager, that support matters. Football clubs operate under constant scrutiny, and Wrexham’s growing profile has brought additional attention to every result and decision. Strong relationships across the organisation can help provide continuity through that pressure.

Parkinson’s gratitude suggests Ker’s value was felt in those everyday interactions, alongside his more visible role in the takeover.

During Ker’s association with Wrexham, the club climbed from the National League to the Championship through three consecutive promotions. He also became a familiar presence in Welcome to Wrexham, helping introduce the club and city to an international audience.

It would be simplistic to assign Wrexham’s success to any single individual. Equally, overlooking the people who helped establish the project would leave an incomplete account of its development.

For Wrexham RoundTable, Parkinson’s tribute raises a wider point about the club’s future: continued growth should include recognition of the people who helped shape its foundations.

Ker’s departure does not diminish his contribution. The takeover he helped facilitate, the relationships he developed and the support acknowledged by Parkinson remain part of Wrexham’s recent history.

As the club pursues its next ambitions, those connections deserve to be remembered. Progress is often discussed through league positions, transfers and infrastructure, but Parkinson’s comments highlight the human contribution behind those milestones.

Ker leaves his formal role with the manager’s appreciation and an enduring place in the Wrexham story. That is a legacy the club has every reason to celebrate.
