Wrexham AFC have reportedly reached a club-to-club agreement with Serie A side Fiorentina for Argentine centre-back Matias Moreno, although the transfer still requires the player’s approval before it can be completed.
Italian transfer reporter Gianluca Di Marzio claims Fiorentina have accepted a proposal worth approximately €8.5 million, equivalent to around £7.2 million. The Italian club would also retain a sizeable 50 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
Di Marzio reports that, despite an agreement between Wrexham and Fiorentina, Moreno must still give his approval before the proposed transfer can proceed to a medical and an official announcement.
Should the deal be finalised, Moreno would become another major statement signing from Wrexham as Phil Parkinson’s side strengthen ahead of the 2026/27 Championship campaign.
Moreno is a 22-year-old, right-footed centre-back who was developed at Belgrano's academy in his native Argentina before making his senior debut in 2023. He played 36 times across all competitions for the Córdoba-based club before joining Fiorentina in August 2024.
Moreno made 12 appearances during his first season in Italy, including four in Serie A and eight in the UEFA Conference League. With regular opportunities limited in Florence, he joined newly promoted La Liga side Levante on loan for the 2025/26 season.
Moreno started 27 league matches and helped Levante record eight clean sheets. His reading of the game was evident in his 37 interceptions, a total that placed him among the leading La Liga defenders in that category. He also registered 130 clearances and 33 tackles during the campaign.
Despite only turning 23 in September, he has already played senior football in Argentina, Italy and Spain. He would arrive with experience of Serie A, La Liga, the Conference League and the Copa Sudamericana.
The reported fee indicates that Wrexham see Moreno as more than a squad option. He would be expected to compete immediately for a place in Parkinson’s back three while also possessing the potential to develop alongside the club.
Wrexham already have several senior centre-backs on their books, including Callum Doyle, Max Cleworth, Dominic Hyam, Zak Vyner, Lewis Brunt, Conor Coady and Dan Scarr. Moreno’s arrival could therefore lead to further movement before the transfer window closes.
Fiorentina’s reported 50 per cent sell-on clause would allow the Italian side to benefit heavily should Moreno eventually leave Wrexham for a larger fee. It remains unclear whether the percentage would apply to the full value of a future transfer or only the profit made by Wrexham.
There is still work to be done before Moreno can be considered a Wrexham player, but an agreement with Fiorentina is the first major transfer story of the summer.
