Reports say Wrexham have begun early talks about signing Leicester City central defender Harry Souttar, as Phil Parkinson looks to strengthen his defense before the transfer deadline.
Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports notes that the Red Dragons are interested in the Australian international now that Sheffield United seem to have ended their pursuit. Leicester reportedly want around £10 million for Souttar, so Wrexham’s owners would need to make another big investment.
Russell Martin, the Leicester head coach, says the club has not received an official offer for the 27-year-old, and the defender has not asked to leave King Power Stadium. We’ve had no official bid,” Martin said.
“So again, it’s all this talk and stuff like that, which can be really distracting. But Harry’s been brilliant, and he’s not been in once to say, ‘I want to leave’, and all that.
“He’s really relaxed about things, and I think he’s going to improve along with the team. He’s not been back in for very long. He’s doing something very different for him, and he’ll continue to improve and grow with us.”
Souttar joined Leicester from Stoke City in January 2023 for a reported £15 million, setting an Australian transfer record at the time. He had limited chances at Leicester before going on loan to Sheffield United for the 2024/25 season.
His stay at Bramall Lane was interrupted by a serious injury to his Achilles, which sidelined him for about 15 months. Souttar has since recovered and reestablished himself at Leicester, starting the first two League One games of the 2026/27 season under Martin.
Wrexham’s interest follows a winless start to the Championship season. Defensive mistakes, especially in the 2-1 home loss to Birmingham City, led Phil Parkinson to call the goals conceded among the easiest his team has conceded during his time at the club.
At 6ft 6in, Souttar would give Wrexham a strong aerial and physical presence, along with valuable experience in the Championship and on the international stage. His leadership could also help a team aiming to climb the division.
The links continue, and with Souttar keeping a clean sheet in this weekend's 0-0 draw from this weekend's 0-0 draw with MK Dons and the defensive mistake at the Racecourse, these aren’t going away. sFans are clearly concerned with the manner of the defeats and goals conceded, but a large part of the fanbase wants to see more attacking options brought into the club, and those options that can find the net on a consistentt basis.
However, there are 31 other clubs that would also be interested in finding a pure goalscorer in this division.
