Wrexham AFC manager Phil Parkinson will look to build on Saturday’s convincing 4-1 win over Preston North End as his side travel to Blackburn Rovers this weekend

Wrexham AFC manager Phil Parkinson will look to build on Saturday’s convincing 4-1 win over Preston North End as his side travel to Blackburn Rovers this weekend, with speculation about his future continuing after a difficult start to the Championship campaign.

The Red Dragons moved up to 14th after securing their third league win of the season, delivering an important response to their disappointing 2-1 home defeat to West Bromwich Albion four days earlier.

Parkinson has faced increasing scrutiny after Wrexham’s first ten league fixtures, with reports linking Steven Gerrard and Scott Parker to the managerial role.

However, the result against Preston has given the experienced manager a chance to build consistency ahead of another demanding Championship fixture. Wrexham entered Saturday’s match having recorded just two wins in their opening ten Championship games.

Their previous defeat against West Brom had increased frustration after Kieffer Moore’s opening goal was overturned by two late strikes.

According to talkSPORT, Wrexham’s hierarchy had been assessing alternatives, with Gerrard reportedly interested in the role if it became available. Former Burnley manager Parker was also mentioned, though no confirmation of negotiations with either candidate has been made.

Parkinson remains in charge and has spoken about the importance of dealing with external criticism.

After the Preston win, the manager said that his players had needed to ignore speculation surrounding the club. The 58-year-old also acknowledged that Wrexham’s international profile brings increased scrutiny compared with many other Championship clubs.

Wrexham now travel to Ewood Park to face Blackburn Rovers on Saturday 24 October, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm. Blackburn have also experienced an inconsistent start to the campaign and suffered a 3-2 defeat against West Brom on Saturday.

The Lancashire club will look to recover in front of their supporters, while Wrexham have a chance to record consecutive league wins for the first time since September.

Parkinson’s side have shown they can compete with established Championship opponents, but maintaining performance levels over several matches remains a key challenge.

Following Blackburn, Wrexham face another away fixture against Sheffield United on Friday 30 October before returning home to play Middlesbrough on 4 November. Those matches will provide further evidence of whether the victory against Preston marked an improvement in Wrexham’s form.

Having guided Wrexham through three consecutive promotions, Phil Parkinson will be determined to demonstrate that he can establish the club in the Championship while pushing the clubs around them to secure a playoff spot and an opportunity at the Premier League.
