Wrexham AFC can push up the Championship table with back-to-back Championship clashes against West Bromwich Albion and Preston North End this week.
Phil Parkinson’s side welcome West Brom Albion to the Racecourse on Tuesday, October 13, with kick-off at 7.45pm, before hosting Preston on Saturday, October 17, at 3pm.
The fixtures are followed by away trips to Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United, making the home double-header a useful chance to build points before successive journeys on the road in a demanding Championship.
Wrexham’s opening nine matches have delivered two victories, five draws and two defeats.
They sit 15th with 11 points, having scored 10 goals and conceded 13. As a result, more than half their league fixtures have ended without either side taking all three points.
That leaves room for improvement without requiring a complete change in results. Winning one match that would otherwise finish level earns two extra points.
This week offers two opportunities to make that difference. However, playing at the Racecourse does not remove the need for accurate attacking decisions or disciplined defending.
West Brom enter Tuesday’s match ninth with 14 points, three more than Wrexham. James Morrison’s side have lost their last two league matches by a single goal each. A 1–0 defeat at Wolves was followed by another against Birmingham City at the Hawthorns.
The visitors will therefore arrive seeking to reverse their own recent results. Wrexham’s opportunity comes against a side still within reach of the leading group, rather than an opponent whose difficulties make victory straightforward.
Tuesday also gives Phil Parkinson a chance to assess how well his players have addressed the attacking details identified after Derby.
Preston’s visit on Saturday brings the second part of the home double-header.
Preston North End are bottom of the Championship with four points from nine matches, following one win, one draw and seven defeats.
Their position creates an obvious opportunity for Wrexham, but it also makes preparation important. Dropping points against a struggling opponent would add further pressure on Parkinson’s side after a relatively inconsistent start to the season.
Parkinson’s selection and approach for Preston may depend on the demands of the West Brom fixture and the players available afterwards.
Four points would be a useful return; two victories would put Wrexham in a stronger position for the subsequent away games.
The immediate objective is to start the week with a win, then carry that standard into Saturday’s match.
