Wrexham’s January transfer planning is already beginning as reports link the Red Dragons with Kristian Lien following another ambitious summer of recruitment.
Wrexham AFC may be several months away from the January transfer window, but the first signs of the club’s winter recruitment strategy are emerging.
Reports that the Red Dragons are monitoring Djurgårdens IF striker Kristian Strømland Lien show just where they feel improvements are needed within Phil Parkinson’s squad.
Multiple reports say Wrexham have added the 24-year-old Norwegian to their watchlist after an impressive season in Sweden. Lien has scored 15 goals in 21 Allsvenskan appearances.
After finishing seventh in their first Championship campaign, Parkinson and the club’s ownership sought quality rather than another complete overhaul this summer.
Wrexham reportedly invested about £ 36 million across seven additions as they tried to build a squad capable of taking another step towards the Premier League.
Anthony Patterson arrived to strengthen the goalkeeping department, while Jacques Ekomié and Issa Kaboré added athleticism and attacking quality in the wide defensive areas. Joe Worrall strengthened the centre of defence, while Callum O’Hare brought additional creativity.
Those additions followed Wrexham’s previous heavy investment following their rapid rise through the divisions.
The recruitment operation itself has also evolved, with former Newcastle United recruitment chief Steve Nickson becoming an important figure within the club’s football structure.
January therefore represents another opportunity to refine rather than completely rebuild Parkinson’s squad.
The early evidence suggests attack could be one area under consideration. Kieffer Moore has provided goals and remains central to Parkinson’s plans, but Wrexham’s overall scoring output during the opening weeks has been modest.
The reported interest in Lien therefore makes sense from a squad-building perspective. At 24, the Norwegian would also represent a different type of investment from signing an experienced Championship forward approaching the latter stages of his career.
His goalscoring form in Sweden suggests potential resale value and immediate sporting upside. However, there are 23 other clubs within the league likely to want a goalscorer that can provide the firepower to drive them up the league or, in Wrexham’s case, to the Premier League
Perhaps the biggest difference between the Wrexham of today and the club that began its journey under Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac is the market in which it can now operate.
The extraordinary revelation that Wrexham were prepared to discuss a deal worth around £ 35 million for Lyon midfielder Pavel Šulc demonstrated the scale of the club’s ambition, even though the Czech international ultimately decided against moving to North Wales.
After another ambitious summer, January appears likely to focus on targeted improvements rather than a revolution, and Kristian Lien is the first new name to emerge as one worth watching.
